Erasmus Beach Party

The event on Facebook advised us to hide our alcohol discreetly as drinking on the beach is illegal, but it assured us that as we are professional Erasmus students we would surely be able to manage it. Some of the girls that we had met out and about came to our flat in Plaza de Mina for some pre-drinks, and to subtley hide our drinks. I finally got my hands on some vodka, which had been proving tricky to find, luckily the corner shop had ordered some in just as they had promised - we bought it all. I chose to mix it with some cloudy lemonade called 'limon y nada' so did a couple of other girls, although unfortunately they picked up the bottles that also had 'a hint of mint' in them, which in reality turned out to be a LOT of mint, but never mind!

After a couple of drinks at our flat we decided to head over to the Irish Bar around the corner, in order to keep some drink for on the beach, also they have nice big glasses of Tinto de Verano which are nice and cheap. We each had a glass at the bar, and met some Spanish guys who were interested in doing some tandem work with us, where we speak in Spanish and they respond in English, so that we are both able to improve our language skills. After one drink we realised that we were going to be late for the meeting time which was 11pm by 'the big tree' on La Caleta, when you see it you will have no doubts about which one it was.

In the end we arrived just before midnight, and there was no sign of an Erasmus party on the side of the beach that the tree was, so we rang some German friends who were already there, they told us that we were on the wrong side of the beach. When they met at the tree they moved to the other side of the beach, so we headed over there, quite confused as to why there wasn't much noise. We spotted a large congregation of people and figured that might be the ones we were looking for. We headed over and our suspicions were confirmed, we saw several people that we knew, some people left because they didn't want to get in trouble with the police. Noone wants a big fine on Year Abroad!

It seemed like most people had split off into groups of people that they were already friends with or who spoke their language which was a shame, but we hoped that as the evening went on this would change and people would mingle a little bit more. Luckily we were right, as people drank more and lost their inhibitions people began to mingle a  little and one man had a guitar and began to play it, it was much better having some background music. My flatmate and I decided that we would go for a late night swim which was great fun, even if it was not very fun being covered in sand afterwards. Late into the night we decided to make our way homes, happy that we hadn't been arrested and that we had spoken to some other Erasmus students. Not quite what we had expected from our first Erasmus party, but a good night none the less.
