Driving through eastern Iceland Part 2
In the morning, we awoke to a gorgeous day! The sun was shining and the snow from the night before was glistening! My boyfriend and I had planned to start the day off on the right foot - with a stint in the sauna. We wanted to do it the day before, but we just didn't have time. So we spoke with the hotel manager and he arranged for it to be warm for us in the morning. Neither of us really wanted to wake up early (9am is early after a long night...), but we forced ourselves to and it was really nice.
After our trip to the sauna and breakfast we finished getting ready for the day and quickly packed up our stuff and we were off! We took a little drive around Breiðdalsvík to see what it looked like outside of a blizzard and then we soon hit the road for back home.
Somewhere nearby Breiðdalsvík there is a place you can go and see a rock that is discolored (it's lighter than the rest of the rock) and you can see in the distance where that discoloration continues (there is a large body of water in between). It really cool in the pictures and the locals talked it up, but we gave it a miss due to the snow. We might not have been able to see it anyway with the snow covering it!
We didn't take as many stops on the way back home, but we did stop to take some pictures of waterfalls, reindeer, and some other areas of interest along the way. We also stopped at place where the first Icelander was christened. His farm used to be in the nearby area, so they put up some signs with some historical information for tourists. There really wasn't much else to see at that stop and it was freezing cold and windy (by my standards), so we didn't stay for too long.
One place we did stop (per my request) was at this beach that had one rock pillar in the middle of the beach. We saw it on our way to Breiðdalsvík, but had to pass it up because we were running late. I'm glad we saw it this day instead because the weather was just glorious and made it that much more beautiful. There were several trails nearby to walk along and explore the area. I love the sound of crashing waves, so this was my kind of place.. despite the wind and the cold. We actually stayed at this stop longer than any of the others. This was also our final stop on our journey.
I was surprised that this was really not far out of Hofn.. maybe only 20 minutes or so. When we got home, that was pretty much it for the day. We crashed... had a good three hour nap and didn't do much else that evening.
