Where to meet with the new Erasmus friends over a beer in Saarbrucken?

You’ve just arrived to Saarbrucken and the new city it is totally unknown to you. You go to your new exchange university and meet your future fellows as well as the other Erasmus students who are just as confused about the new places as you. What is to be done? You start talking with them, share contacts, social media’s but you don’t have enough time to get to know each other properly during the school time. In this situation, the best thing you can do is going out over a beer, or two or three, but hold on, where are and which are the best pubs in Saarbrucken to do like so?

In the following article I am gonna share with you my favorite pubs where I would drink a beer with the exchange students from my host university. Thus, during our Erasmus experience we went to quite a few pubs that where around some of them became our favorites and we would choose to go out to these:

  • Synop

  • Tante Anna

  • Ulanen-Pavillon

  • Kaverne

  • Gasthaus Bingert

Synop, the vintage pub

In Synop we’ve been I think most of the times. The café and pub Synop is located on Mainzer street in St. Johann neighborhood. If I am right, the closest bus station is Johanner Markt and if you are using the tram, then Landwehrplatz station is 6 to 7 minutes away from Synop. Before or after drinking some beers, you can have something to eat in Yummy Döner, a fast food located right next to the pub.

From Monday to Thursday and also on Sunday it is open starting with 7 pm and ending with 3 am. On the other hand, on Friday and Saturday, Synop is open from 7 am to 5 am.

The vintage décor with the big sofa chairs positioned in the back gives the place a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. The tables with the sofas placed somewhere in the back are maybe the most hunted ones because it makes you lay down and feel much more intimate and comfortable.

In the summer time, they open the terrace too for people who want to enjoy drinking a beer in the night’s air. The music played is very good and I remember that one or two times when we went there a DJ was mixing the music. It is known that they also organize small live concerts.

The bartenders are nice and respectful to the consumers. The prices are reasonable and you can chose from different kinds of beer such as bier von fass ( draft beer ) Urpils, Bitburger, Beck’s, Heineken, Warsteiner, Pilsener, Bruch and other more. If you don’t like beer then you can have various cocktails or hard drinks like whiskey, rum or gin. Going to the toilet is not a nightmare because the restrooms are kept pretty well clean.

Tante Anna, the bar with board games and good music

Tante Anna was also a pub where we would chose to go pretty often especially since when we found out that there we could play board games. The pub is located very close to Synop, on Turkenstrasse, almost in the beginning of the city center.

From Monday to Sunday the bar is open from 10.00 am to 02:30 am. On Friday and Saturday it is open from 10.00 am to 04.00 and on Sunday until 01.00 am. In the warm season people can chose to sit inside or outside. The pub is not so large but the location is pleasant.

When we went out here for the first time we were impressed by the good music they were playing and we wanted to come back in Tante Anna for this fact. A moment when I was hearing Johnny Cash in the pub got stacked in my head. Later we discovered that the pub holds live concerts too of which you can take notice of if you follow their Facebook page.

The atmosphere was all the times chilly and friendly. The employees are treating the customers right and are fast in orders. The prices for beer are higher then in the other pubs we’ve been to in Saarbrucken.

We spend same funny nights in Tante Anna playing domino and Mikado – commonly known in English as “Pick up sticks” -. We had so much fun playing these games and we could enjoyed other games too if we would have know the german language because besides the two games there were others with german instructions.

Ulanen Pavillon, the most beautiful beer garden in Saarland

When the late spring and summer arrived in Saarbrucken, Ulanen Pavillon was one of the options to drink a beer outside, in nature near the river Saar. The brewery is positioned in the Am Staden park. From Monday to Sunday, the place is open starting with 11.00 am and ending with 21.00.

Opened since 1987, Ulanen Pavillon had became one of the most famous beer gardens in Saarland, a title confirmed by the award they received from the Saarbrücker Zeitung, namely “Most beautiful beer garden in Saarbrucken" ( inofrmation take from the pub's website). They served us with fresh draft beer made in the region which was always cold and tasty. Here I think they have the best beer in the entire city.

Since Ulannen Pavillon doesn’t has an inside location, the people are enjoying the drinks on the many tables arranged in theirs area of Am Staden. If the weather is sunny and there’s no rain, the place is full with people especially on the free days and weekends, but don’t worry they have a free table for everyone.

If you are getting hungry before or after having the beers then you can have something to eat from the grill they also have. The common food cooked here is the curry wurst.

Kaverne, the hookah place

Kaverne is a Hookah Lounge placed on Cecilienstraße. We found this spot when we wanted to have a bit of fun smoking hookah. The pub is open every day from 16.00 pm until early morning like 1.00 am or to 2.00 am. On Thursday and Friday it closes later at around 3.00 am.

Besides the drinks they offer, here you have the option to smoke a hookah and a very good one. You can pick from various flavours such as dragoon fruit, mint, passion fruit, vanilla and many more.

The employees are very nice with the customers. For example, once we could not decide which flavor to get and the waiter solved the situation by making us a mix of two flavorings. The hookah he prepared for us was so good. The price of a sisha varies between 8 to 10 euros and is much more convenient to came here with friends, share a hookah and split the cost of it.

Due to the smell and vapor of the hookahs, the atmosphere is restful and mysterious, but still intimate. The toilets are downstairs and are clean and well taking care of.

Gasthaus Bingert

The pub is found on Nauwieserstraße in the Nauwieser Viertel, a quarter of Saarbrucken known for the numerous pubs and drinking beer spots. Gasthaus Bingert doesn’t have something very special, but the place has a beautiful and a relaxing atmosphere that makes you wanna come next time too.

The bartenders are friendly with all of the customers regarding the people. The prices are reasonable and the offer gives you a variety of beers and other drinks.

After or before the one, two or three beers you have to eat something

Finally, if you are getting kind of drunk from visiting all of the above spots, I have one more recommendation for you in terms of eating at night on your way home.

Arian Grill is probably the most visited and known fast food restaurant from Saarbrucken. The location is found on Großherzog-Friedrich-Straße, very close to Rathausplatz and all the time there are people eating here or waiting in line. You can sit and eat at a table or you can take over the food at home.

From Monday to Thursday you can eat or grab something to eat here from 11.30 am to 0.00 am. On Friday and Saturday Arian Grill is open until 5.00 am! So all of the people coming from pubs, bars, clubs or wherever can have a foods such as donners, rigatoni, pizzas, kebabs.

They are also preparing vegan friendly dishes if you ask for it. The prices are cheap. For example, a small falafel donner costs 3 euros and is not so small, but rather enough to saturate the midnight hunger. The employees are more then nice and interact with the customers in a friendly. Usually, if you are ordering in English, they will ask you where are you from.
