Valencian night out for students on a budget!

Being an exchange student, working an unpaid internship, nights out weren’t really my priority as I wanted to save as much money as I could. However, after meeting new friends and hearing more about the City, I began to realise it really isn’t too expensive. Of course, money will have to be spent, but I am here to provide my tips based on my experience of living in the beautiful City!

In Benimaclet (a neighbourhood in Valencia) they are known to have many students living there. Here, you can expect to find many cheap bars and kebab places which aid for the perfect location for a chilled night with friends. My favourite is 'Amigo Kebab'. I tend to visit here after a stressful day at work, to unload all my problems with half a litre of beer or sangria for 1.50€! The staff are super friendly too, and the service is always immediate. Sit down outside and within 60 seconds someone will already be with you to take your drink order! Perfect for being on a budget, but wanting to socialise with friends.

The main thing I realised whilst clubbing in Valencia is everything happens much later than I expected! In Spain there is no point in arriving to the club before midnight as you will most likely be the first person there. Doing so, will waste a lot of money as you may find yourself bored, and therefore buying drinks you don't really need. In general clubs in Valencia are open from 00:00 midnight - 05:00/ 06:00.

One club I do recommend is Aquarella. This is a nightclub on the beach. It’s an amazing experience for all erasmus students as I had personally never been on a beach for a night out before. It will make you feel like you're on holiday as you hear the waves crashing onto the beach in the distance.

When the nightclub finishes around 6am, you can follow the crowd to the beach and watch the sunrise! Entry for these types of nightclubs are usually free before 1:30am and drinks are usually 3-6€, dependent on your preferences. I usually go for a shot of tequila and a beer to follow, these are 3€ each so its perfect! Similar prices to this include Mya. Of course places like this get very very busy so make sure you get there as early as possible to get the free entry and avoid waiting long durations in the que!

What about the types of music?

I know this is a key factor when choosing where to go on a night out. Being in Spain, the key genre in most places is Reggaeton, so expect to hear a lot of Maluma or Shakira.

However, if you're into techno or any other genre, I recomend the Oven Club. It's located not too far from Xativa metro station so is definitely accessible! This club is usually open until 7am so it's perfect for those of you who love a bit of techno and like staying out late!

How do I know what is on at each club?

This was something I found very difficult. I had no idea how to get onto a guest list or what type of music would be playing or even how much entry may be (if there was an entry fee). There had been many times I had wasted time and money on a night out that resulted in a complete fail. This was usually due to my dislike to the genre of music or the costs of entry fee's and drinks.

There is an app that most people use for this, it's called Xceed. It shows all club events in Valencia and what date they will be happening. It also gives a brief description on what DJ may be playing and how much the entry fee will be. This is great to plan in advance where you're going and what to expect. This website also gives you the chance for free entry on the guestlist to most clubs before 1:30am.

It will also tell you what genre of music is playing at the club. So if you're thinking of going somewhere but have not been before, I recommend looking it up on Xceed first, just to double check any fee's and the genre of music.

There is nothing worse than getting ready for a night out, spending money on the taxi, only to realise the club really wasn't what you'd expected it to be. Therefore, researching and looking in advance will really help in keeping the costs low!
