Sunday in Gdansk
Hello readers, or "cześć", as you would say in polish. This time I would like to give out some tips on how to spend your Sunday in Gdansk doing something fun with a group of friends or just enjoy in some activities in pure solitude.
What to do in Gdansk on a Sunday?
Early morning
As one of the best morning routines you can start off by preparing breakfast for yourself. It can be a fruit salad with pancakes or just some scrambled eggs with toasts and fresh tomatoes. My favourite is oatmeal with dried fruits because it gives me a boost of energy to go outside or even stay in my room and be active. Once I learned a lot on how to prepare oatmeals for breakfast and many of its variations, my desire to eat breakfast outside was gone and you can understand why looking at this picture of one of my breakfasts...
Nonetheless, if you want to eat breakfast here in Gdansk there are some options. If you are into pancakes there is a place called Yummy! Or you can simply walk in the old town of Gdansk and choose the one you like.
If you want to go shopping or just visiting a local store to buy some things, you have to know that a couple of months ago Poland has undergone a big change: it has been established by the higher institutions that in each month there are going to be two free trade Sundays’ where supermarkets and most retailers will remain closed. This means that shops will be open during the first and last Sunday of each month so watch out if you don’t want to be disappointed by such an event.
The afternoon
Now that we are in full spring season it is a must to go for a walk by the seaside and enjoy the fresh breeze and the sun that won't go down before 8:00 pm. Tricity (the triplet cities including Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia) or Trojmiasto as one would call it in polish, offers many options when it comes to the sandy beaches: Brzezno, Jelitkowo, Sobieszewo, Stogi, the main beach of Sopot and the main beach of Gdynia. The first two beaches listed here are one of my favourites because they can be easily reached by tram and until now they're not too crowded. Personally I recommend a barbeque by one of this beach locations with a group of friends and just enjoy the wind and the flavourful food straight from the grill. If not in the mood for a barbeque, you can stop by at one of the ice-cream shops which you will find when you will go off the beach area and some of them are really good. I remember one in particular ice-cream vendor from which I got a chocolate and raspberry scoop in the middle of November.
Late night
My ideal Sunday night is when I share some quality time with friends over some tea or I just stay in my room and plan out things for the coming week. If you are eager to get yourself into some activity then you should definitely check out the weekly Couchsurfing meeting that is usually takes place each Sunday in some pub where you have a comfortable place to sit down, get something to drink and join a multilingual conversation with different people. Very often there is a group for each language like for Polish, French, Spanish, English and German. This is a very nice occasion to make new friends and get to know the locals while learning new vocabularies in the language you have always wanted to learn or improve. And I can assure you that there are some really nice people that I also met there.
An alternative is to put on a nice jacket against the wind and take a slow walk through the streets of the old town and fall in love with its charms and its lights brighting the way for you, my reader.
Cheers to you!
