Polish speaking guide 9

In Polish, nouns, adjectives, pronouns (personal, possessive and interrogative), numerals and adjective participles are all inflected for different cases.

Examples of cases:

  • Mianownik (nominative)
kto? co? - who? what? in questions for nouns,
    jaki? jaka? jakie? - what? in questions for adjectives;
  • Miejscownik (locative)
    (o) kim? (o) czym? - (about) whom? (about) what? in questions for nouns,
    (w) jakim? (w) jakiej? (w) jakim? - (in) what? in questions for adjectives.

The preposition w (in/at) is used with nouns in the locative: w Europie (in Europe), w Polsce(in Poland), w Warszawie (in Warsaw), w Pradze (in Prague - capital of the Czech Republic), w Wielkopolsce (in Wielkopolska), w Małopolsce (in Małopolska), w Bawarii (in Bavaria), w Szkocji (in Scotland), w domu (at home), w sklepie (in the shop), w centrum (in the centre).
If the preposition w is followed by a noun beggining with at least two consonants (apart from rz, sz, cz, ch, dż and dź), we usually use the form we, e.g. we Francji (in France), we Wrocławiu(in Wrocław).

Some nouns, however, take the preposition na, e.g. na uniwersytecie (at the university), na lotnisku (at the airport), na poczcie (at the post office), na Białorusi (in Belarus), na Ukrainie(in Ukraine), na Węgrzech (in Hungary), na Mazowszu (in Mazovia), na Śląsku (in Silesia), na Mokotowie (in Mokotów), na Pradze (in Praga - district of Warsaw).

The preposition na describes a location on the surface of something e.g. na ulicy (on/in the street), na biurku (on the desk), na telewizorze (on the TV-set). Also, it is used when referring to islands and peninsulas, e.g. na Sycylii (in Sicily), na Majorce (in Majorca), na Kubie (in Cuba), na Bałkanach (in the Balkans).

The expression mieszkać na/przy ulicy (to live on … Street) is used to describe an address:
Mieszkam na ulicy Marszałkowskiej. or Mieszkam przy ulicy Marszałkowskiej. (I live on Marszałkowska Street.)

The locative case answers the question gdzie? (where?), e.g.
Gdzie mieszkasz? - Where do you live?
Gdzie znajduje się ulica Marszałkowska? - Where is Marszałkowska Street?
Gdzie jest Marta? - Where is Marta?
Gdzie pracuje Michał? – Where does Michał work?

It is also possible to build more detailed questions, e.g.:
W jakiej firmie pracujesz? – What company do you work for?
Na (/przy) jakiej ulicy mieszkasz? – What street do you live on?
W jakim pubie Michał spotyka się z Martą? – In what pub are Michał and Marta meeting?
