For people that hate packing, this job might be the worst nightmare. I don't know why but I am always surrounded by friends who do not like packing. To be honest, I pretty get this skill from my mother and Marie Kondo. If you do not know her yet, go stumble upon her youtube channel. There, you can learn how to efficiently fold your clothes, declutter your rarely-used clothes which do not spark any joy anymore. You can also find lots of funny memes using this "if it no longer sparks joy, throw it away". Not only about tidying up your wardrobe, she also does nice videos about packing tips.

So here in this post I would like to share list of things to carry when you want to live abroad for more than a year. I have shared this list to many people before and they really found this as useful. Other advantages by having this long list is that you do not have to spend a lot of money abroad to buy things that are originally super cheap in your country and you had it but you forgot to bring it. This can be super annoying.

Sling bag and Backpack

Let's start with what to bring in the cabin. Prepare one sling bag, in my case I prefer the one with short sling that stays on my chest, so it won't disturb me when I need to walk. Inside this sling back put your:

-ID, passport

-Boarding pass

-Wallet (with 60% of your cash)

-Card holder with important emergy contacts in case you lost your phone, insurance card

-Phone, charger, powerbank, headset

Next, is your backpack:

-A folder of all important documents: letter of acceptance, anything visa-related papers, your diploma, birth certificate, accomodation document (in case the immigration locket ask), insurance details and copy of everything. Do not forget to scan every paper and put it in your drive.

-Personal medications

-In a transparent bag: travel-sized toilettry

-Spare clothes and underwears, polar towel, in case you lost your check-in baggage

-Laptop, USB, charger, memory cards, hard disks

-Spare phone

-Reading glasses and sunglasses

-Neck pillow, mask, eye cover

-40% of your cash, in case you lose your sling bag

Checked-in baggage

I suggest you to divide the load into 2 different suitcases (big and smaller)

-College attire: plain white and black shirt, patterned short (floral), plaid shirt, blazers, 2 plain or striped long sleeves, trousers & skirts (formal). I suggest in total 4 shirts, 2 jeans (black and blue), 2 formal trousers (black and khaki), 2 skirts (plaid and plain).

-Outers: Jeans jacket, leather jacket (black and brown), hoodie (black or grey), rain coat, autumn coat (black or khaki), cardigans

-Home outfit: 2 sets of Pyjamas, 1 set of winter pyjamas, 2 T-shirts, 2 shorts, 1 evening gown in case someone is knocking at your door and you dont want them to see you with your sleeping attire

-Daily attire: 3 T-shirts, 2 trainings (black and navy blue)

-Winter attire: 1 all-in jacket for snow and rain, 2 pairs of gloves, 2 sweaters, 3 turtle necks, leggings, scarf (black, white, red)

-Socks, stockings, underwears

-Your special traditional cloth from your country that is simple to wear and carry

-Shoes: running shoes, raining boots, snow boots, high heels. I never used my flat shoes here due to the cold weather

-Make up and skin care routine

-Stocks of medication

-Special food from your country

-Little souvenirs from your country for your friends and future professors/colleague/important person that help you a lot in the future

-Towel, bath robe, shower cap, toiletry

-Electronics: hair dryer, small iron for cloth, mini rice cooker

-School things: tablet instead of notebooks, spare notebooks and stationery, ID card holder, folders, calculator

-Rope and clip for drying cloth

-Sewing kit box

-Bags: shopping bag, laundry bag, 1 or 2 nice bags to hang out

-Plastic glass, bowl, plate, spoon and fork for your first days of settlement

I know it is a pretty long list but remember at the end you can always donate to some organizations whenever you feel it is too much. However, thanks to this list I did not really buy a lot of stuff during my stay here. Trust me or trust me not.

I enjoyed reading your post. The way you approached was enlightening. It made me reflect on a discussion I recently had on illiciumlondon.co.uk/blog. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Keep up the good work!
