Majestic cafe Porto

History

Majestic cafe, a very fancy cafe located in the city centre of Porto, was built in 1921. In 1983, its attractiveness and its particular significance in Porto have brought it to be categorized as a spot of public-interest. Besides, it is also categorized as a cultural heritage location. A complete restoration program was undertaken and in 1994 it reopened again. The cafe originally was a place where the elite met with each other, like artists, writers and politicians. J. K. Rowling, the writer of the Harry Potter series, used to spend much time in this cafe while she was living in Porto, working on her first Harry Potter book. Also Kubitshek, a former president of Brazil, used to visit Majestic frequently.

Design

This stunning cafe may be among the many known bars/cafes in Portugal. It’s one of the greatest historic cafes in the World. As the inside of the cafe, the façade is made in an Art Nouveau style, created by the designer Queiroz. It's a touristic attraction, but at the same time it gives you an excellent feeling drinking you cup of coffee there.

Majestic cafe is located in Rua Santa Catarina, the main shopping street of Porto. Actually you can’t miss it, its overwhelming façade is very apparent. There is a little patio on the back part of the cafe where you can relax and read a book simply while having a coffee. Needlessly to say, in such places the menu is not cheap.

Facilities

The building is accessible for people with physical impairments. Besides, there is a smoking area. There is no Wi-Fi, but actually you don’t need internet in places like these, where you only need to enjoy the magical atmosphere while drinking your cup of coffee.

The waiters speak various languages besides Portuguese, like Spanish, English, French and Italian. Also important to know is that they accept various payment cards, like MasterCard, Visa, American Express and of course the Portuguese Multibanco.
