Hunting down the best churrería
After so many posts, by now it must be obvious that I am a big fan of chocolate con churros. In my opinion, it is the best breakfast you can have in Spain. Especially my Brazilian friend, Kellen and I have been discovering newer and newer places to have churros. So I thought: why not help all those people who are already in Salamanca or who will be arriving within a short period of time and want to know what the best churrerías are in the city? Therefore, I will devote this post to introducing and discussing the quality and prices of all those places where we keep returning to.
Before starting, I have to note that it would be difficult to rank these churrerías, because all of them have their positive and negative factors. One can be the best destination if you want to find a really cheap place, other can be the best based on its chocolate, and again another one can have the best atmosphere. Thus, I won’t rank the places, just list them one by one.
Restaurante Rua Mayor
- Price: Chocolate with 3 churros costs 2. 60€
- Quality: Very good both the chocolate and the churros. Churros are only fresh in the morning.
- Place itself: It is a restaurant-tapas bar. Nothing special but with a pleasant atmosphere.
- Address: Calle de Rua Mayor 9, Salamanca
- Comment: Regarding the price-quality ratio, probably this place wins. Another positive factor that it is very close to Plaza Mayor.
La Tahona de la Abuela
- Price: Chocolate with 3 churros costs 3€
- Quality: The churros are good, but the chocolate could be better. Churros are fresh in the morning
- Place itself: Originally it is a bakery with a wide range of delicious pastries and cakes. They also sell ice cream during the high season. I love this place, it is very cosy with good and relaxing music.
- Address: Avenida de Alfonso, VI, 15, 37005, Salamanca
- Comment: Although I like the place a lot, it is probably not the best choice when it comes to churros.
Valor
- Price:
- Big cup with 6 churros: 4. 90€ (5. 20€ at the terrace)
- Small cup with 4 churros: 4. 25€ (4. 55€ at the terrace)
- Extra big portion: 2. 55€ (2. 75€ at the terrace)
- 4 churros: 1. 70€ (1. 80€ at the terrace)
- 2 churros: 0. 90€ (1€ at the terrace)
- Quality: The chocolate is black and incredibly delicious – however, if you prefer with other type of chocolate, you can choose from many, but for a higher price. The churros are also very good and they came fresh, but different from the usual ones: they are twice as big but they don’t have the usual star shape.
- Place itself: Valor is a bar specialized in chocolate (chocolatería). They offer a great variety of gourmet chocolates with different flavours. They also have all the sweet things you can imagine for a perfect breakfast: pancakes, waffles, brownies ect.
- Address: Calle Libreros 14, 37008, Salamanca
- Comment: This is a really good place with delicious chocolate – especially for me, since I love dark chocolate. However, its drawback is that it is quite expensive. But it is worth visiting once in a while.
If you want to order extra churros:
Granier
- Price: Chocolate with 2 churros costs 1. 90€ (you can ask more if you want for extra price)
- Quality: Both the chocolate and churros are good. As always, you don’t go when they prepare the churros, you won’t get them fresh.
- Place itself: Granier is another bakery, but it is a little bit cheaper category than La Tahona de la Abuela. It also has a nice atmosphere.
- Address: Calle Zamora 47, 37002, Salamanca
- Comment: This is another favourite place of mine. However, I usually go there to buy some croissants or Spanish pastries. And it is an advantage that it is located close to Plaza Mayor and to the bus stop as well and thus, I walk by it many times, and I have to tell you, usually it is really hear to resist.
Pintarolo
- Price: chocolate with 3 churros 2. 50€ - and it goes with free orange juice
- Quality: Chocolate and churros both are quite good. Not freshly cooked.
- Place itself: It is a small place outside of the old area. Still, it is always full of people and therefore, it is difficult to find a place to sit down.
- Address: I couldn’t find it on the internet, but it is very close to the bus station.
- Comment: We used to come here often during the first term with my classmates, because it is very close. Although the place is nothing special, it has everything that we needed.
La Morucha
- Price: Unfortunately I don’t remember exactly, but a chocolate with 3 churros is around 3€. However, I do know that each churro costs 35 cents.
- Quality: Kind of like most of the places I have mentioned above, but nothing out of the ordinary. And again, similarly to the rest, the churros are already prepared.
- Place itself: Very simple, easy design – it would never catch my attention.
- Address: Avenida de Filiberto Villalobos, 74, 37004, Salamanca
- Comment: Again, we used to come here, because it is right opposite to the language school. The churros are good, but I don’t like the place itself that much.
As you can see, it is very rare to find a place where churros are prepared just in the moment, but that doesn’t mean that they are less delicious. People always eat it this way, and since the chocolate is always hot, it results in a very good combination in the mouth.
I hope you take my advice and visit some of these places.
