How to look after your money in Geneva

This is something I honestly wish I figured out before moving to Geneva. Money can be a real issue when you’re here. Although Geneva is not as expensive as you may expect, somehow money seems to disappear quickly and you end up looking through your bank statement to see what you're missing. I thought to write up a few hacks to hopefully save you from confusion and to help you better look after your money when your abroad.

  1. Make sure you divide your exact allowance monthly. This is so when you have to pay for contracts it is easier to realize how much money you actually have available for the month.
  2. Put aside rent money. This is better in cash in an envelope so you have no risk in accidentally spending it. Then honestly I find it better taking it to the Post Office and paying for rent as soon as possible.
  3. Put aside you phone contract cash and the 45 CHF of travel monthly. This is so you don’t risk spending any money you may really need.
  4. With the remaining balance decide an estimate of how much you will spend for food shopping each week. Whatever this sum is bare it in mind and go for your shop at the begining of the week.
  5. With whatever is left divide by four, and from here you can easily see how much money you are left with to spend in bars, cafés, travels and shopping.
  6. Whatever you do just make sure you sort out your priorities and keep track of what you spend - as many times I have been surprised of what was left in my bank account!
