How to get to Slovenia?
Right, I'm going to tell you how you get to Slovenia from Spain, and believe me, if you're from the North like me, it's far from easy.
Getting a direct flight to Slovenia is a pain in the backside, and worst of all, expensive! There aren't many low cost airlines, only Easyjet (Ljubljana-London) and WizzAir (Ljubljana-London, Ljubljana-Brussels/Charleroi) go direct and the truth is they are pretty bad, especially in winter when the flights are even less frequent. The airport is near Brnik, 26km north of Ljubljana, and is pretty small, if your flying to/from this airport, don't worry, there won't be much queuing.
Personally, I think the best option is to travel to an Italian airport; most common are Venice (Treviso and Marco Polo), Trieste, Bologna and Milan and you could even go to Graz (Austria). They all have international flights all year round and you can find some Low Cost airlines too, finding a cheap flight shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Now here come the problems based on where abouts in Spain you're flying from. If you're from the south, you've got it easy. There are flights with Ryanair, Easyjet, Vueling o Volotea from Sevilla, Valencia, Ibiza, Mallorca and Barcelona to Venice and Trieste. Some of these change in Winter, but you shouldn't have too many problems.
If you're in the from the North, like I said earlier, it's slightly more complicated. There are flights from Madrid to Venice, but now Low Cost options, if you still want to go from Madrid you can use Iberia, the Easyjet flight was cancelled about a year ago (Please do it again, please) so going to visit my family is a trek, although I recently bit the bullet and started flying with Iberia and spared myself the 20 hour journey from Ljubljana to León... yeah, 20 hours!
There are flights with Vueling between Venica and Bilabo but in Winter they are impossible to find, you have to try and find something else. One option you have is to fly between Bologna and Madrid with Ryanair, but this way you'll lose a lot of time doing the travelling. You can also go with Ryanair or Vueling between Venice/Trieste and Barcelona but you'll need to find a connecting flight. I looked at Easyjet's Ljubljana-London-Asturias flights, but the flight times are terrible and you nearly always have to spend the night in London (which can be good if you want to do a bit of tourism).
From Milan you can get a Ryanair flight to Santiago de Compostela, which if you're from Galicia, is actually really good (a friend of mine from Vigo found this and didn't have a bad word to say about it).
You're probably asking: what do I do when I get to these airports to actually get to Slovenia? Well, don't worry, a Slovenia airline has already thought about this and has it all taken care of. Se llama GOOPTI, here's the website: http://www.goopti.com. When you book your flights, tell them your flight number, when you arrive and other information that they can use to guarantee that even if your flight is delayed or something happens, they don't end up waiting ages for you in the airport and can pick you up the next time around.
They use 9 seater vans and are always picking up and dropping people off to different airports (it only works in Slovenia, if you're going to an airport near Slovenia or nearby). When you book your place, they give you the option to be dropped a the bus station or for an extra 3 euros they drop you wherever you want, which if you don't know the city, is a good thing to do.
