What's it about?

It's all about the money, money, money. You're singing it in your head, aren't you. The truth is at the end of the day we all would love to know how to earn some extra cash wherever we are, putting our skills and talents into good use and exploiting every opportunity.

Ever since I came to Iran, I've been looking for ways to earn some extra pocket money. I'm calling it pocket money because it's hard to call it a salary or wage, as it is often not enough to help maintain your life but it's good to have a little extra cash and spend it for leisure, etc. The best way here as for anywhere else in the world is teaching languages. If you are a fluent or native speaker in any language and have some teaching experience, the answer is to teach foreign languages!

Iran is a developing country and there is an endless need for foreign teachers and instructors. Although there are a few things to bear in mind:

1) Most learners are looking to learn English as a second language and therefore as expected there is always a higher need for native and credible English teachers than any other languages. The most accredited institutes in Tehran are : Safir Language Institute, Kish Institute of Science and Technology, TAC-C and Aryanpour Novin Language Institute.

My own personal experience is that I worked for over three months in an accredited English language institute in Tehran, teaching English to young learners. The pay was not high enough to maintain me but it was good to have a little extra and most importantly to get some experience. Given I'm only 19, lots and lots of experience and resume building are needed for my future. Personally had a superb time with kids and teenagers and I would proudly say it was one of the best experiences of my life.

2) The next in demand languages are German, French, Spanish and Turkish respectively. There is a high percentage of young learners looking to learn German as Germany is one of the number one destinations for Iranian students to further their studies. So if you are fluent and have experience teaching either of these languages, make sure to give it a try.

Where to find the job?

There are countless institutes in Tehran, amongst the most accredited language institutes are the ones I mentioned above and many other great centers for different languages. I say most accredited because they have many branches all across Tehran and Iran in general, they both require teachers to send out a resume and in some cases it is followed by a personal interview. You can always contact the institutes directly via email or phone and ask about any teaching positions.

There is also this website called Rahnama which posts out ads to hire tutors and language instructors. Most ads are written in Persian but you could find a few written in English and then calling the number to arrange an interview.

Lastly, if nothing regarding the institutes worked out, try private tuition. There are a few benefits to this, first of all the pay is much higher, the average pay for each session is about 30, 000-80, 000 Toman, which is basically 8 to 20 dollars per session. The fee is dependent on you but this is usually the norm. Although the drawback to this is that, it is much harder to find private tuition jobs, you could give out ads in newspapers, online or contact agencies that send private tutors for students in their houses and get some commission.

Remember that the search can seem a bit daunting at first but it'll be rewarding and you will find a suitable job for sure. Being a teacher is one of the most rewarding jobs on this planet, I'm sure many will agree.

Hope this is hopeful!

Cheers
