How I Decided Which Scholarship To Choose For College
When I took my ACT test, I chose my list of colleges. The four colleges were Cowley County Community College, Washburn University, Wichita State University, and Hutchinson County Community College. From this list of four colleges, I chose Cowley County Community College because it would be easier to get my general education courses and some of the other basics for my degree out of the way. It would make it easier to transfer to a four year college, like Wichita State University or Washburn University.
Cowley County Community College was the only school I applied and get first written case study for when I graduated high school. I went to a Senior Day, and they held auditions for a theater scholarship. It was one of the few scholarships that you could audition for.
When I went to audition for my theater scholarship, I was given a cold read of ‘Janice’s’ monologue from “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds” by Paul Zindel. (A ‘cold read’ is where you are given the script or monologue at the time of the audition. You do not get to prepare for the part.) I performed the cold read in front of two of the theater instructors and hoped for the best.
During the Senior Day, I toured the college, met with one of the theater instructors who actually was giving the tour, looked inside one of the dorms and saw the college cafeteria. We were also treated to lunch, prizes, and a slideshow while we were there. I also got to see the theater more in depth, because of the tour, like the scene shop that was behind the stage. I also took a placement test to see what classes I needed to start with and also enrolled in my classes for that summer and fall.
Cowley College is a open-admissions school according to the ACT guideline, which means they’ll accept you even though there maybe a limited capacity involved, so I didn’t have to worry to much about my high school GPA restricting me on getting into a post-secondary school.
Open-admissions is basically when a college states that they will accept you, even if that college wasn’t your first choice. For me, Cowley College wasn’t my first choice, it was however the best choice I made for my college career. If I hadn’t chose Cowley County Community College, my student loans would have been higher.
When I received the the acceptance letter and scholarship, of course I accepted, because as I mentioned before, Cowley College was the only school I had applied for.
The acceptance letter that I received from Cowley County Community College stated that I enroll in some classes that were to help towards the degree, keep a certain G.P.A., and enroll in at least 12 hours. Other requirements of the scholarship included club meetings and play productions. The cost of the scholarship covered books and tuition.
When accepting multiple scholarships from one college or multiple colleges, look at what it is being covered, like books and tuition. Also, look to see if it is a renewable scholarship. If it’s not a renewable scholarship, it’s probably best not to accept it. If it is renewable, take it into consideration, just remember to look at what is being offered. You might want to look on the back of the scholarship to see if there are any other instructions for appeals, suspensions and any other important things pertaining to the scholarship.
