Daily life in Sevilla

Blog: ... und ich wollte nach Irland!

I really don't know how long I can endure this torture of writing this in English... I know I will switch to german anyway at some point.

The very fact that so many Erasmus students seem to have the time to write blogs so often describes life of an Erasmus student quite well... Despite passing some exams at the end of the semesters, the duties of an Erasmus student are kept within bounds.

Lucky me I got to enjoy the whole beauty of this city and the lifestyle of its inhabitants... Whether relaxing in one of the countless parks, drinking an espresso in the alleys of the casco antiguo, a beautiful old district near the cathedral, or partying in one of the international bars with other folks... You really get used to that lifestyle quite fast.

To really get to know the city, you have to be shown around by Spanish people, that's why I'm glad to share my flat with a Spanish girl and a Spanish guy (besides a polish guy and a french and another german girl). There is no chance to find the really cool and authentic places if a spanish guy didn't show you where to go. Apart from that you get to speak spanish and that's why I decided to go to Sevilla in the first place...

Erasmus students are nice folks, you know, but I didn't come here to speak English... In the end it is nice to have a mix of languages: Spanish, English, as well as german, provided that you take your time to speak each for longer than 20 min, otherwise it will get fucked up... I had that problem while searching for a flat: some spoke english.. and some did not. That is quite confusing...

Once you really get to settle and find a regimen this problem will be gone. I found a flat near 'Prado de San Sebastián', some kind of a axis of public life and commotion, what makes it quite the best place to live I can imagine... The room itself is huuuge and despite its central location the flat is smooth, in a word it is ideal!

To go to university, it is best to go by metro, the nearest station to my flat requires a 2 min-walk. Unfortunately, the metro system of Sevilla only consists of one underground line, so any destination north of the cathedral has to be reached by bus, bike, etc... The University 'Pablo de Olavide' is outside the city, it is not big, it is not that beautiful, it is not well known, yet I can hardly imagine a better university for studying as a foreigner... The profs are very very helpful and cooperative, the atmosphere is very friendly. That's why the UPO [Universidad Pablo de Olavide] got so many of us, I guess...

Overall, daily life for me in particular is going to UPO in the morning, enjoying the 'siesta' [time to rest and sleep] during in mid afternoon and to be on the move at most of the nights... That is not quite what I expected, but I'll get used to that for sure...

So much for now, I'll stop writing now, so I can pretend i got a life...

'Saludos'.
