ACU

Utrecht is full of many great places to go out to and to eat at. But here I want to tell you about the ACU.
It is a rather large venue with a bar in the front and a hall where they have gigs and club nights.
As I understand it, the place used to be a squat where they had lots of parties and such.
Then they decided to make it official. One of the things I love about it is that it still retains its community atmosphere.
It seems as though everyone knows one another. But this is not in that awkward cliquey kind of way, it is just that every one is very open and friendly with everyone else.
I have been to plenty of nights at the ACU. One night which was particularly fun was when some friends and I saw a crazy punk band where the band members were all in dresses and various hats. They played a song called 'I Amsterdam you' in protest of the new 'I amsterdam' tourism initiative. Another was a really fun psytrance night. They transformed the hall into a psychedelic heaven.
The ACU is not just about great music, they also have a vegan restaurant called Kitchenpunx. The food on offer is different each week but all of it is extremely tasty. I would go as far as to say that it is one of my top 5 vegan restaurants.
So if you if you are a fan of something off of the beaten student track make a trip to the ACU!
