A very cold and dark city located in South Yorkshire. D'oh!

... was the first sentence l read about Sheffield after l figured out that l am nominated to Sheffield Hallam University as an Erasmus student..

lf you google "Sheffield Uk" *which l definitely didn't  think about when l was writing down as first choice* or take a walk on Sheffield streets via google earth *shows you the darkest and emptiest day of Sheff* it might not seem like best place to go for Erasmus but the thing is; It really is for a million times sure!

When all my friends searching for 5 euro train tickets Paris to Amsterdam l was searching for the number of sunny days in Yorkshire…

After few mental breakdowns and very busy months; l got my visa and ticket, plus arranged my place...

*feeling like an adult*

A week before the leaving day l realized that l am missing the pick-up service with few hours, also because of the arrival day is on Sunday my accommodation company won't be able to hand my keys in!

Manchester Airport, Sunday Morning, 2:20 AM

So that's the part my parents to stop reading, as if..

The plan was I was going to spend my first night in airport, than going to Sheff with the first train and meet with third year medicine student Nat who l met on lnstagram randomly. She told me that she can collect my keys and pick me from train station; and she actually did! (not gonna talk about the amazing night on Airport, hugging my luggage almost-frozen and skype-ing my parents, pretending everything is super-okay, whatever)

l was picked from train station on 17th of September Sunday morning by my Japanese friend that l know definitely nothing about her… Than we were in campus of the University, almost 30 degrees out here; people were sliding in a huge kiddie pool half-naked and looking at me dressed up like a massive blanket roll.

The only disappointment l experienced was l was expecting to disappoint; looking around fascinated by the beauty of city, weather and all these kind people… My apartment was even better than the pictures!

My first week;

Tired of eternal first week events, having all the free shots & meals, walking all around Sheffield thinking about “it supposed to be something wrong, can’t be that perfect!”.

I was warned about the intense Yorkshire accent before! Remembering in my first class day looking at one of my mate’s face smiling and thinking “Well, l didn't get a word, hope it’s not a question tho”.

  • All alright? (hi, all alright?, l was thinking that’s are you alright till l am back..)
  • Cheers (cheers for simply everything)
  • Brilliant
  • Ace (that’s ace, oh ace!)
  • Fancy (might fancy?)
  • Bloody smt.
  • Mate
  • Tho (use as much as you can)

*confession*

I was thinking everyone asking to me “are you alright?” (which l discovered so late it’s all alright) because l was looking tired or sick and answering like “oh do l look like l am not? Thanks anyway..” for few week.

*confession*

That will be all for now! This unexpected start followed by uncountable hangover mistakes, library nights, missed trains, weird hostel people and one pound veggie burritos xx

Ps. Just realized the category of post is “Erasmus Tips”! Well l might not be the rightest person to give tips but one thing l can suggest is; leave your comfort zone immediately where ever you go (especially if you are in Sheff). Cheers!
