Experience in Bergen, Norway by Line
What is it like to live in Bergen? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Bergen can be described in three words: wild, beautiful and wet.
What is the student lifestyle like in Bergen?
Every faculty or uni have their own bar and there are so much bars in Bergen, you can go to a new one almost every day in a year.
How much does it cost to live in Bergen?
It is expensive to live Bergen, as it is Norway’s second biggest city. But if you have patience, you can find a good spot for about 5000 NOK a month, if you are willing to share apartment with other students. If you want to have your own apartment it will be from 8000 NOK and more.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Bergen? Is there any advice you can give?
There are student accommodations several places, but often they are located a bit further away from the city centre. But you can use websites like Hybel.no and Finn.no + Facebook groups to find accomodations.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
There are a lot of restaurants to choose from, but eating out is expensive. It costs about 200 NOK for an okay dinner, and alcohol in restaurants are about 100 NOK per unit. My favourite dishes is everything with seafood.
What places would you recommend visiting in Bergen?
Bryggen, Fisketorget and Johanneskirken. All the 7 mountains surrounding the city, or specifically mount Floien and mount Ulriken.
Is it good to eat out in Bergen? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
There are some very good restaurants in Bergen, but they are expensive. Also the vegetarian offer is often not that great and there are often only a few options if you don’t want meat or fish. My favourite spots are:
- “Ruccola” for pasta,
- “Inside” for burgers with student discount,
- “iSushi” for sushi with student discount
- “Pygmalion” for more vegetarian options.
Is the nightlife good in Bergen? Where is good to go?
There are so many bars in Bergen to fit every need.
- “Vaskeriet” have silent disco on Wednesday and Thursday.
- “Ricks” is the biggest one with three floors and big dance floors.
- “Hendricks” have the cheapest beer
- “Heidi’s” gives you afterski vibes.
- “Sjenerøs" is very chill with an outdoor feeling even though you are inside.
- “No stress” is a little cozy place for cool drinks.
What advice would you give future students heading to Bergen?
Save money so you can afford to live there as it is expensive for food and alcohol. Also bring a rain jacket and wellies for the constant rain, plus hiking boots for mountain hikes.
