Experience in Belo Horizonte, Brazil by Isabela

What is it like to live in Belo Horizonte? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

It's my favorite city in Brazil. I consider as a "big small city". Lots of buildings surrounded by beautiful mountains. The weather is perfect. Not too hot and not too dry or wet. 3 million people, but everywhere you go, you find someone you know. It's the national capital of bars. The perfect place to enjoy happy hours while drinking good craft beers produced in the regions. It is also the hometown of "Mineirão", one of the biggest stadiums in Brazil.

What is the student lifestyle like in Belo Horizonte?

Good. Lots of universities around the city, with many campuses available for most of them. You can party in the many pubs and clubs, and also enjoy the calm wine bars.

How much does it cost to live in Belo Horizonte?

It's not that expansive if you compare it with Rio and São Paulo. The rent is really fair, depending on the region you intend on living.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Belo Horizonte? Is there any advice you can give?

No, there a lot of websites advertising homes. I suggest Netimoveis, Zap Imoveis, and Casa Mineira.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

THE BEST FOOD IN BRAZIL. Pão de queijo, feijoada, queijo minas, doce de leite, feijão tropeiro, frango ao molho pardo. The sensation of hungry is something you will NEVER feel in Minas.

What places would you recommend visiting in Belo Horizonte?

Savassi for shopping and food, and squares.
Pampulha for the stadium and football matches, and also a big lagoon where you can ride a bike, and practice sports.
Praça do Papa for a perfect view of the city while enjoying food carts and coconut water. Perfect spot for pictures as well.

Is it good to eat out in Belo Horizonte? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Very good. My favorite places for eating is Duke n Duke, a pub where they serve burgers and craft beers.
MeatPlease, also for burgers and beer.
Est! Est!! Est!!! is the best Italian restaurant in town. Yakan is amazing for Japanese food.
Chopp da Fábrica is the best place to eat after partying and to eat typical food from Minas, they are open 24hrs.
AA Wine Experience is good for tapas and wines. Baccos is also a good place for enjoying good wines.

Is the nightlife good in Belo Horizonte? Where is good to go?

Very good. Lots of pubs and clubs. My favorite is called Paco Pigalle, where they play lots of Latin songs.

What advice would you give future students heading to Belo Horizonte?

I'm sure you would enjoy the peaceful Beagá (the way we call it). The people from Minas are really receptive. If you need any kind of help, they are always willing to help it, even if they don't speak your language.
