Experience in Belgrade, Serbia by Hristina
What is it like to live in Belgrade? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in Belgrade has a lot of different experiences to offer, the people are very pleasant, life there is fast-paced, the streets are narrow and steep. There a lot of culture and you can attend music festivals in the summer by volunteering. There are all different classes of restaurants in Belgrade, to suit all tastes and budgets, with all different foods and interiors.
The night life is fun and there are a lot of bars in the city centre, which stay open all night, but they don't drink as much as the other Balkans countries. The fields next to the city offer seasonal jobs with accommodation and food. The traffic is the same as in other capital cities, there are accidents and lots of traffic. I wouldn't recommend living there, going for a visit can be an unforgettable experience.
What is the student lifestyle in Belgrade?
There are some university residences (fourteen in total) for students and exchange students. The atmosphere is pretty good. They offer furnished rooms, with private bathrooms, TVs, internet and food places for cheap.
How much does it cost to live in Belgrade?
Compared to the rest of Europe, it's very affordable, even cheap. For students, it costs approximately €90 to live in the university area including food. For tourists, if you want to rent an apartment in the centre of the city, it'll cost you between €200 and €300 with bills.
Transport is very cheap, costing 50¢ per ticket and you can get a monthly ticket that are even cheaper. Petrol costs €1. 20 a litre for unleaded petrol. Vegetables don't cost much, in general, and meat is expensive. Other activities, like going to the hairdressers or the salon, are too expensive.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Belgrade? Do you have any advice?
I can't comment, because I have my own apartment, but I said something about this subject in previous questions.
What is the food like there? What are some of your favourite dishes?
Well, meat is the national food, as well as grilled dishes, bell peppers, onion and other vegetables, there are some different cakes that they took from the Turkish a long time ago, so there are few national cakes.
Where would you recommend to visit in Belgrade?
Well, that's easy. I'd recommend Ada, the Avala Tower and the Atelje 212.
And to eat in? What are some of your favourite places to go?
The restaurants on Kralja Milana street in the city centre are very good.
My favourite place is the Balasevic en Rakovica restaurant, eleven kilometres from the city centre.
Where would you recommend for a night out in Belgrade?
I don't have anywhere to recommend, they all have a lot to offer and are in good locations, but especially the ones next to the river.
Do you have any advice for students coming to Belgrade in the future?
Study a lot and go to see something at the theatre, we have some very good actors.
