Experience in Belgrade, Serbia by Francesco
What is it like to live in Belgrade? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I like my experience here in Belgrade, even if I am here only since a month. Still I have to visit many places outside the city, but in general, I am satisfied. People are friendly, food is good and you can see similarities with "Latin countries", but at the same time, you notice here we are in a sort of "The Middle East", between Slavic and Turkish world. The knowledge of English is not so common, but I speak Serbian (better than English), so it´s not a problem.
I recommend this city, both to work and to study.
What is the student lifestyle like in Belgrade?
Students can take advantage of an incredible list of pubs, clubs and parties. Private parties are very common and usually then people go to discos and/or clubs (disco-pub).
How much does it cost to live in Belgrade?
Depending on yourself, but I think that with 300 euros per month you can take advantage of all in the city. If you want to visit all Serbia the cost can be higher, but not more than 400-500. The guide of the University of Belgrade quote that the monthly living costs are about 500.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Belgrade? Is there any advice you can give?
You can find small flat (30-40m2) for 200-230euros per month, but I don't recommend this option. Is better if you try to find a room in a bigger flat or house. In the center it can be more difficult and more expensive, but in the Vozdovac district or in Novi Beograd (the zones that I know better) can be easier and less expensive. Personally I pay 70 euros per month plus internet (18 euros per month).
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I like the Serbian cuisine: my favourite dishes are guvec' (rice with meat and vegetables), jaghnjetina pod sacem (a kind of lamb) and zito sa slagom (a sweet of sugar and cream).
What places would you recommend visiting in Belgrade?
San Sava, the center and the Danubian route.
Is it good to eat out in Belgrade? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
You can find typical restaurants where you can hear even popular music played and danced by local people.
Is the nightlife good in Belgrade? Where is good to go?
In my opinion, a cheaper option is to go in groups of 5-6 person to "club" (similar to disco-pubs) in the centre of the city where you can drink hearing and dancing "narodna muzika".
What advice would you give future students heading to Belgrade?
Of course, came immediately. If you are looking for a different Erasmus experience, but even for different job opportunities, Belgrade can offer you more than what you can imagine. But be sure having a basic knowledge of the Serbo-Croatian language.
