My Erasmus Experience in Barcelona, Spain by Alice
Why did you choose to go to Barcelona, Spain?
I study English and Spanish and I wanted to improve my Spanish; I already knew Barcelona well and I really liked it so I decided to go there.
How long's your stay? What financial aid do you receive?
I'm here for 5 months. I get a 210€ grant every month from my university.
What's the student vibe like in Barcelona?
The students are very welcoming and nice.
Would you recommend the city or the university to other students?
Yes, Barcelona is a superb city, rich with lots of cultural and architectural gems.
What's Spain's food like?
Apart from a few tapas restaurants, Spanish food really isn't the best.
Did you have any difficulty finding accommodation in Barcelona?
No.
What are living costs like in Barcelona?
Food bought from supermarkets is a bit less expensive than the rest of Europe, but everything else is about the same price.
What's it like learning the language there? Did you take part in any language courses organised by the university?
I didn't do any language courses because I already had a pretty good understanding of Spanish. If I'd chosen to do a course in Catalan, I would have picked the university's course though.
What's the most economical way to get to Barcelona from your home town?
By plane.
And to eat in Barcelona? What are your favourite places?
Bernie's and Taverna Basca Irati.
What cultural places do you recommend visiting?
The museums, the parks, and the different quarters in the centre.
Any advice for future students going to Barcelona?
Unless you want to learn Catalan, make sure you choose lessons taught in Spanish.
