Living in Barcelona: A native's opinion

What's it like living in Barcelona? Would you recommend it?

Barcelona is a city of contrasts where nightlife and daily life mix into one. I've gotten to know the city more and more over the years, which has made me learn to appreciate it even more.

I think it's a good city to live in, although it's expensive.

What's the student life like in Barcelona?

Barcelona has lots of good universities, and the students there are friendly, fun-loving, interesting and intellectually productive...

How expensive is living in Barcelona?

It depends on the area, as prices vary considerably. Districts such as Pedralbes and les Corts are the richest, whereas el Borne and el Raval are more affordable.

Did you find it hard to find somewhere to live in Barcelona? Do you have any tips for flat-hunting?

I've never had to worry about this, since I live here. Generally though, students don't seem to have problems finding accommodation since there are youth hostels where various cultures and people intermingle.

What's the food like in Barcelona? What's your favourite dish?

The food in Barcelona is fantastic and very varied. Two of my favourite dishes are 'botifarra amb mongetes' and 'calçots'.

What places would you recommend visiting in Barcelona?

I would recommend first of all visiting the main tourists sites, and after that, all the artistic places the city has to offer: museums, art galleries... and to top it off, use your intuition and go wandering through the streets. That way you'll discover interesting and picturesque places.

What about eating out in Barcelona? What are your favourite places?

Since I love organic food, I would recommend the following places:

  • Centfocs (on Calle Balmes, 16)
  • Teresa Carles (Calle Jovellanos, 2)
  • L'hortet (Calle Pintor Fortuny, 32)

For fans of Asian food:

  • Haninjung (Korean restaurant on Calle Aribau, 32)
  • Ramen-ya hiro (Calle Lleida, 11)

and many other restaurants.

What are the best places for partying in Barcelona?

Marina is the best place for rock, metal and alternative music lovers. The club Razzmatazz is also there.

The Vila Olímpica also has a great selection of clubs: Shoko, Sotavento, Opium...

Do you have any advice for future students coming to Barcelona?

Try and discover the real Barcelona by yourself. Going partying isn't the only thing you can do at night.
