Judith's Experience in Barcelona, Spain
What attracts you to living in Barcelona? Do you recommend it? What's it like?
It's a really special city. It is both peaceful and has a good atmosphere with lots of tourists and people partying.
The climate there is warm, a Mediterranean climate, one of the best in the world.
We have the great fortune of having a beach and a mountain a few minutes away from the city.
The architecture is really great, we can boast of having some of the best architecture like that of Gaudi. You can visit his majestic work, the Sagrada Familia, a monument which the people of Barcelona are very proud to have in their city.
What's the student lifestyle like in Barcelona?
Thousands of students come to Barcelona for Erasmus for the student atmosphere and because you can feel at home in Barcelona.
How much does it cost to live in Barcelona?
Life isn't as cheap as we'd like in Barcelona. Renting most of the time can be quite expensive. The gastronomy is quite affordable compared with other places, and you've always got to bear in mind that it is a Mediterranean diet, which uses fresh products and has a high nutritional balance.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Barcelona? Do you have any advice?
I am from here, so we know which areas suit our tastes and budgets.
But if anyone has any questions about finding accommodation here, I am happy to answer them and try to help!
What’s the country’s food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is really great. You can't go to the city without trying paella (which, although the dish is originally from Valencia, they make it really well in Barcelona), Spanish omelette, bread with tomato, fricandó (beef stew), mar i muntanya (meat and fish in sauce), bacalao con sanfaina (cod and fish in samfaina sauce), escudella (combination of soup and stew), anchovies, melon with cured ham, cannelloni, vegetable timbale with goat's cheese, fuet (cured sausage), calcots in romesco sauce...
What places do you recommend visiting in Barcelona?
The first, and main thing to visit is the Sagrada Familia. Then there's also the Sant Pau Hospital (created by Lluís Domenech i Montaner), La Pedrera (Casa Mila), Park Guell, the seafront, the Gracia neighbourhood, the Gothic Quarter, the cathedral, Santa Ana Church, Santa Maria del Mar Church, Montjuic Mountain, Montjuic Castle, Camp Nou, the Barceloneta neighbourhood, the Rambla, the Santa Caterina Market...in reality, there will be magic in any corner of the city that you visit!
