Experience in Barcelona, Spain by Irene
What is it like to live in Barcelona? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Living in BCN is great. Honestly, I am very happy that Barcelona is my hometown, as it has good weather through the year, beautiful landscapes and amazing gastronomy. There is also a very well organized public transport system!
What is the student lifestyle like in Barcelona?
Very good, you have a lot of places to go party and very good universities to study (Faculty of Biology is considered to be one of the best of Europe! ). However, prices can be high (generally speaking) and the streets are sometimes dirty, but that is a minor thing if compared with everything good about BCN.
How much does it cost to live in Barcelona?
As I said, it is a bit expensive. Public transport fees are high (but quality is very good), flat or student rooms rents are also a bit high (if you compare it with living in villages around BCN city center).
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Barcelona? Is there any advice you can give?
No it is not. There are plenty of websites to look for accommodation, I have a lot of friends at University who didn't have any problem finding a place to live when they came to BCN.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is great, very tasty and healthy too. We have the Mediterranean diet, so we eat a lot of vegetables and fruit, rice, pasta, cheese and pork/cow meat. Don't miss the famous pa amb tomàquet (a great and easy to do meal! ).
What places would you recommend visiting in Barcelona?
I would definitely recommend to visit the ancient parts of BCN: el Raval, el Gòtic and el Born. Amazing streets with little or no traffic (but a lot of people), some of them a thousand year old! BCN has a lot of history and it is always good to discover it. Also, do not miss the sea side!
Is it good to eat out in Barcelona? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes, very good. Veggie Garden and Teresa Carles are two of my favourite places to eat out. Both offer a great variety of veggie-healthy food, and Teresa Carles owns the famous brand of organic (and delicious) juices "Teresa's Juicery". I would not recommend eating in les Rambles: the quality/price relation is not fair at all, you will eat regular food for a too high price.
Is the nightlife good in Barcelona? Where is good to go?
Nightlife in BCN is amazing, plus bars and discos open until very late (or early in the morning! ). If you're a girl you won't pay to enter some clubs or discos however, if you are a boy you will always pay. Sexism also exists in BCN!
What advice would you give future students heading to Barcelona?
Come! You will definitely have a great time!
