Erasmus Experience in Barcelona, Spain by Chisa
Why did you choose to go to Barcelona, Spain?
It's a very diverse city with a great location. I also wanted to learn more about the history of Catalonia. It was an opportunity to enhance my ability to speak Castellano, learn a bit of Calatan and meet new people.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The graduate program is until July 2014 and I arrived in October. I received a 20% discount on tuition, but no scholarships or other financial assistance.
What is the student lifestyle like in Barcelona?
There are many students living here so it's a great way to meet new people. There is always something to do, whether you're into partying or simply going to the movies. Barcelona has a lot to offer to young students.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Barcelona to other students?
I would recommend Barcelona to others. However, I attend EAE not UAB.
What is the food like?
Awesome! Tapas, paellas, bocadillos, everything is worth trying. You will find a lot of pork products, which I personally do not care for.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Barcelona?
The university provided a list of places to recommend.
How much does it cost to live in Barcelona?
I think Barcelona is expensive! It's probably due to using the dollar with the exchange rate. However, make sure you have a chance to know where you will want to live before you arrive. Many of the agencies charge fees and it can get very expensive. I would say I spend about 420 euros on rent, 30 euros on transport, 1500 euros on education, and 80-100 on food/entertainment. I try to budget as much as possible, but it's easy to end up having to spend about 1000 euros a month just on living expenses.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Previously studied Spanish (Castellano) so it is fine. I have many friends who do not know the language at all and are having issues. Surprisingly, not as many people as you think speak English here.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Barcelona from your city?
Train. It costs about 105 euros for unlimited transportation in 3 months.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Barcelona?
Opium, Jamboree Jazz Bar, Movies
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Barcelona?
Go out every once in a while, but you will save money if you cook! Barcelona has so man fresh markets. Take advantage of them by cooking and eating healthy!
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Have not had a chance to explore many as of yet!
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Barcelona in the future?
Pay attention to your belongings. Try not to purchase food and/or gifts at the tourist sites as they are typically more expensive.
