Columbus and the New World
When I came to visit this city in Barcelona, I always walked on La Rambla Boulevard, stretching from Placa de Catalunya until the last point where I visited the Columbus Monument, a Great pioneer in discovering the New World.
- Columbus General Information
This tower is 60 meters (m) built at the 1888 World Fair in Barcelona. This memorial deliberately reminds the world that, at the beginning of Colombus, he was born in the Italian city of Genoa, serving the Spanish court of King Ferdinand V, and Queen Isabella. On the 60 meter high column is a bronze statue of the magnitude of 7.2 meters. He stood majestic hand pointing to the far sea, left hand holding a scroll (or leather?).
- What is he pointing at?
Many talked about What did you point to with your right hand? Many think he pointed toward the New World, he discovered, helped Spain become a world power several hundred years ago. However, some people think that he pointed toward the Italian city of Genoa, where he was born.
Some people think the real direction. He is just pointing at the city of Constantine in Algeria. Most think he pointed toward his pointing out, the Mediterranean Sea, to refer to him as a maritime talent who succeeded in exploring the New World. I think it should not be too detailed, lost the meaning of the Monument.
However, I just want to share a little about Colombus, I find him not as great as many people think.
Colombus - not great as we think
1, Columbus does not prove that the earth is round: Many people believe Columbus is a man who demonstrates the earth round by proving to go around the world by boat. The earth is round and round, and then it goes back to its original state. In fact, the ancient Greeks proved it. In the sixth century BC, the mathematician Pythagoras (Pi-ta-gor) concluded that the earth was round, and two centuries later the Aristotelian philosopher agreed with Pythagoras. By 1492, educated people knew the earth was not as flat as the nia.
2, Columbus is not Europeans cross the Atlantic Ocean. Five centuries before Columbus was born, Leif Eriksson (Norse Viking) was thought to have set foot on Newfoundland. Many historians have written that Irish explorers have crossed the Atlantic centuries ago. The whole of America commemorates Columbus's arrival in this land but few think of celebrating Eriksson.
3, There are 3 countries that do not accept Columbus explorer. For an expedition, Columbus had to persuade the king of Spain, and many of the rich offered him money for exploring Asia. Portugal, England and France do not agree to grant money. Some people have said the trip must be much longer than Columbus had intended. The king of Spain is also suspicious. In fact, it was just as suspicious. The ocean is much larger than Columbus's, but for him and his crew, instead of going to Asia, he traveled to America.
Nina and Pinta are not the names of two of Columbus's three ships: In the 15th century in Spain, the ships were named sacred. But seafarers are named after the nick. They took the name Pinta a slang word "prostitute" to put a boat.
4, Columbus has travelled four times to America. After 1492 Columbus arrived in America three times. These times he went to the Caribbean Sea, South America and Central America.
5, Columbus returned to Spain in 1500. Columbus is thought to be a wicked Native American. Indigenous people do not pay enough gold to be tied up and handled. In 1500, the king of Spain sent the man convicted of Columbus for the wrongdoing, he was arrested and brought back to the country. However, he was only deprived of power, but was continued to explore the fourth time to occupy resources for the king.
Eclipse may have saved Columbus. In February of 1950, Columbus was abandoned by the crew, aboriginals starved him. But on February 29, 1950, the Lunar eclipse occurred. Columbus threatened an Aboriginal person, that is heaven punishment, if not for him to eat, then the Lord will take all the light, burn the earth. That night the lunar eclipse masked the moon and then became flushed, the Aboriginal people apologized to Columbus for forgiveness. So he did not starve to death.
7, Even Columbus is dead, Columbus continues to transcend the Atlantic. After the death of Columbus (1506), he was buried in Valladolid and moved to Seville (Spain). At the request of his daughter-in-law, his body was transferred to Hispaniola and buried at the church of Santo Domingo. When France invaded the island of Hispaniola (1795), the Spanish rushed to find him and transferred to Cuba before returning to Spain during the Spanish-American War (1795). Are people arguing about the return of Columbus or not, or have been mistaken for evacuating someone else because of a box that looks like the remains of Columbus in the church of Santo Domingo. In 2006, they tested DNA and proved that what remained of the cottage belonged to Columbus even after 500 years. Dominicans are not currently testing DNA at the church. The controversy over the explorer continues.

I did not accept him - a colonizer
Nevertheless, I do not deny that he was an explorer, navigator, but a colonizer. He lived in a time when major European countries were competing economically and competing for trade, occupying colonies everywhere. Thanks to the trip to explore America and the New World, Spain quickly took over these lands, exploited wealth, became a global power. The legacy of this time, is today's Spanish is spoken in many countries around the world.
