Catalan Language

Dear readers,

it's a great pleasure and pride for me to talk with you about the Catalan language.

I didn't appreciate Catalan!

In reality, I never settled for this language, already a real controversial issue in and out Barcelona. On the contrary, when I was still in Italy and I cared about the political fightings for Catalan independence, I was one of those people who, like a mere ignorant, thought that Catalan community's independence was just a "superficial" matter, because I believed in Spanish supremacy.

It's also due to my previous ignorance that now I'm really happy to be here and to live the Catalan community, with a view completely different from the former one.

A so rare and so beautiful language!

If I can justify my previous thoughts about the issue, and they were due to an incorrect kind of curiosity, right now I firmly believe that Catalan community is not only a free-standing population with a huge history behind it; but also that Catalan language, which citizens are proud to speak, is really far from being considered an endangered language" or "only" spoken by a few population, but it is, as many others think, a developing language, or, at least, I do hope so.

Rivalry between two languages nearly equivalent!

I didn't change my mind just because I'm living here right now: indeed, I had the opportunity to understand that, a lot of Spanish people, as known, refuse to learn this language (that you must not consider a dialect) and also that some Erasmus students neither tried to learn it for their studies: as you know, in a different post about the languages spoken in Barcelona, I talked about the possibility of taking exams in Spanish language. I personally think it's a severe mistake.

No short-cut!

Regardless of the beauty of being totally surrounded by the culture of the country in which you are living, both for a holiday and for study or work, I think that Catalan culture is worth finding it out as it is, without any short-cut in order to be easy for you learning a new language or speaking with other people.

That's why I want to speak Catalan. I don't do it just because study reasons oblige me to do so, but because it's my choice. This post also will get updated soon, because I want to give you as much information as possible about Catalan language!
