Day plan: Neusiedl am See, the biggest lake in Austria

Day plan: Neusiedl am See, the largest lake in Austria

Hello everyone! How are you doing? Today I want to show you Neusiedl am See. It is a lake which is just a 45-minute drive away from Bratislava, in Austria. It is the biggest lake in Austria. In fact, it is so big that it also occupies a part of Hungary. The interesting thing about this lake is that it isn't deep at all. The deepest it goes is 1. 80 metres, so it isn't the best lake to swim and snorkel in by far.

We went there on any Sunday when we didn't have plans in Bratislava so we decided to spend the morning there, chilling and eating. The truth is that the whole area is quite nice. You can see people wandering around, cycling or jogging on the river-bank. Also, around Neusiedl am See, there are lots of different restaurants, ice cream shops and cafes to sit and chill and enjoy the sunny day. There is also a green area where you can play volleyball and a play area for smaller children. As you can imagine, it is a really popular area in summer, especially during warm and sunny days.

Faro Podersdorf

We decided to go around the edge of the lake, exploring the area until we came to this place, which is probably the most famous one in the lake. It is this lighthouse, painted with red and white stripes. It is called Faro Podersdorf, in case you want to look it up. It is definitely the most famous place in the whole lake. Any photo that you search of Neusiedl am See, Faro Podersdorf will appear. Later, I will show you some of the photos that I took on this day.

We were there for quite a lot of time laying on these wooden footbridges. Even though it was still spring and it was a bit cold (we bought jumpers with us) the sun let us enjoy a warm temperature and get a bit of vitamin D.

From here, you can see how some people practice sailing, wind-surfing, or kite-surfing, since in this lake they offer classes and courses to practice these sports. There is also a small port where they dock the boats. Actually, from this point of the lake, you can rent boats to do a tour of the lake.

Before I spoke to you about how shallow the lake is, and an interesting fact is that a couple of years ago, the water went down by 30 centimetres; so lots of boats had problems moving because they touched the bottom of the lake and they were left stranded.

To eat

After being there for a while, taking photos and sunbathing, we decided to go to eat. Honestly, there is quite a wide range of restaurants, even though a lot of them were closed at the time that we went there. There was quite a lot of variety but there are quite a lot of restaurants with typical Austrian food, which I have to say is quite good, except for the Schnitzel, which in my opinion is a very simple dish which is pretty lacklustre (a life-long schnitzel). Finally, we ate in any restaurant which was there, I can't remember the name right now, but they are all more or less the same style. The food was good so whatever there is when you go, go there.

In terms of parking, I have to say that in both places that we parked it was free, which was perfect. I don't know what it would be like in the middle of summer, in high season, since this lake is quite busy during July and August.

Being honest, this lake is not much compared to the others that we have visited before in Austria, but I think that for a weekend getaway and to discover a new place, it is alright. Especially with good weather. And that is the post for today. I hope that you have enjoyed it, and I will see you soon in the new post. I will read your comments. Best wishes.
