Driving into Boeotia, a more rural region of Greece with maybe Thebes as a well-known city, we visited the mountain fort Gla.

Passing modern buildings on our way, we had to get on top of the mountain to enter the fortified position.

The thick and high walls were impressive, considering the location was from Mycenean times, but not used in Greek or Roman times, maybe just a bit in Byzantine times.

This mountain fort was actually ten times larger than contemporary Athens or Thebes. Still, Homer does not really mention it ... strange. Sometimes, awesome things are forgotten. Let's keep the memories alive!

The fort on top of the plateau was really amazing in its extension! It housed a palace and an agora at least, along with some minor buildings.

Returning downhill, we passed some modern huts huddled together at the hillside. They looked ancient, but were still in use. Could you imagine living here?

From high above, we had an amazing view over the dry plain with the sharp contrasts between ocre, green and blue from the mountains and the sky. With this view, we went on by bus to see the Orthodox cloister Hosios Loukas.
