Experience in Abuja, Nigeria by Sindara
What is it like to live in Abuja? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I like it, it's a quieter city than Lagos but it's one of those places where it'd help to know a couple people before you went. The city's quiet, and pretty at night.
What is the student lifestyle like in Abuja?
It's quite lively, there're always parties and get-togethers. There're quite a few clubs and bars but you obviously have to know which ones are good. Students usually live on campus so they'll probably be there during the day
How much does it cost to live in Abuja?
I'm not sure, it depends on where you live and who you live with; I never had to pay rent or anything. By most standards, I guess you would say foods that were popular in the US and UK are expensive in Nigeria but local foods, which are amazing as well but different, are cheaper.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
I love Nigerian food even though not exactly adventurous when it comes to food. I really like amala and ewedu, jollof rice as well and plantain. The thing about Abuja is that you can afford to not eat Nigerian food and you won't starve, there're a lot of fast food places: Chinese eateries, pizza places but after a while, they get old or too expensive.
Is it good to eat out in Abuja? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
I like eating out. I usually go to Dunes in Wuse 2 or the Bukka restaurant at the Hilton Hotel. I go to Drumstix for shawarmas...
Is the nightlife good in Abuja? Where is good to go?
These are the places I remember: Blu Cabana, Soho Lounge, Bamboo, most hotels also have clubs and bars.
What advice would you give future students headed to Abuja?
I would advice you to meet people. While some Nigerians can be rude, a lot of them are amazing and you can learn a lot about Nigerian culture and Abuja just by talking to them and listening.
