Erasmus Experience in A Coruña, Spain by Veronica
Why did you choose to go to A Coruña, Spain?
I didn't choose to go to A Coruña, my university chose it for me, but now I'm happy I was sent here because it's a beautiful city, that otherwise I probably would have never seen.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I'm studying here just for the second semester (end of January - mid of May, with exams in June).
What is the student lifestyle like in A Coruña?
I have classes only in the morning, but it depends on faculties.
In the afternoon there are many bars where to go for a coffee, or parks or beach where to have fun if the weather is fine.
To go out in the night Thursday and Saturday are the best days, but you can always find something to do.
Would you recommend the city and the University of A Coruña to other students?
I would of course. The only weak point is the weather: when I arrived in January it often was rainy and windy.
But it didn't last too much, and with good weather the city is wonderful.
What is the food like?
Don't expect paella y sangria, we are not in Valencia or Andalucia, but try pulpo and raxo, they are worth it!
And don't forget to attend to Queimada ritual.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in A Coruña?
It took a long time because I wanted a good flat next to the centre, but there are many groups on Facebook where you can find advertisements.
How much does it cost to live in A Coruña?
It's a really cheap city. Of course cheaper than Italy, but even than other Spanish cities not too far from here.
Caña is between 1€/2€ and you can find many tapas with the same price.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
I already knew Spanish before coming, but the University offers free courses of different levels, as well as a course of Galician.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to A Coruña from your city?
From my city (Bergamo) there is a cheap Ryanair flight to Santiago, but only in Spring.
To come in January I travelled from Milan to Madrid and from there to A Coruña with Iberia.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in A Coruña?
Calle Orzan and Rua Juan Canalejo are the centre of nightlife in A Coruña, but there are also discos in the port (e. i. Amura or Royal) or on the beach (Playa and Moom 57).
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in A Coruña?
The best way of eating here is tapeando. Next to Rua Galera are all the bar de tapas, with a wide variety of food and price.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
You must visit Torre de Hercules - the anciest roman beacon still working - as well as the Old city centre (Maria Pita square) and Monte San Pedro.
There are also many museums and places to discover.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to A Coruña in the future?
Enjoy your experience and take the best from everything, Coruña is a great place to live.
