Traveling is expensive when you’re an adult with an adult job, so how on Earth could a student afford to see the world? For many students, it is a distant dream that seems impossible. However, there are a few tricks and tips that can help you be the adventurer you want to be in a safe way that does not include using a tent as your home.

 Try Airbnb

Accommodation can often end up being more expensive than a plane ticket. The prices of hotels can be so high that the idea of visiting your dream cities seems impossible. Luckily, Airbnb can help you find a cheaper option in a completely safe way.

Furthermore, you can also earn some extra money by listing your own apartment through Airbnb and allowing someone else to use it while you’re on your vacation. Double win!

Warning: If you end up using AirBnb be careful not to get scammed. It is easy to get blown away by an amazing cheap deal and forget all the risks.

Avoid restaurants and learn cooking

It may be tempting to go out with locals, explore the amazing restaurants in all those beautiful capitals like Lisbon but it will also eat through your savings rather quickly. Why not learn how to cook a local meal yourself? Ask the people you meet to teach you some local meal and you will not only save up but also have the opportunity to learn something that you can show off back home. Let’s face it - most students have no idea how to cook so it would be a good opportunity in any case.

A few stops along the way can save you a fortune

A direct ticket is a dream come true. There is nothing better than getting on the plane and arriving right at your dream destination but it is often rather costly. Going from the UK to New Zealand? Avoid being lazy and do your research for the cheapest, best plane ticket. After all what is most important is being able to afford it.

Sure, it may be absolutely annoying to sleep at airports but at the end of the day a ticket with a few stops can actually save you thousands. This brings me to the next suggestion:

Sleep at the airport

Do not be shy. At some point in a person’s life comes a time when they too shall sleep at the airport. It is embarrassing, uncomfortable and absolutely annoying but have you seen how much airport hotels cost? Bring a pillow and definitely a pair of earplugs and an eye mask.

Make a few compromises

Yes, the new iPhone looks awesome but would you rather have an object that you do not really need when you already have one that works perfectly fine? Wouldn’t it be a lot nicer to use the money for a ticket to your dream destination? Making a few compromises about the way you live can save you thousands.

New phone, new excessive clothes, eating out all the time instead of cooking, paying for a bit too many drinks when you’re out clubbing with friends. Those are all things you can avoid and save enough for your adventures that will make you a lot happier in the long run.

Work a bit harder

I know that as a student it is already difficult to find time for everything. However, giving a bit of your time to working online as a freelancer or getting an extra job instead of partying might be the best thing you can do for yourself. As a freelancer you have many options - try websites such as UpWork or get paid for something you do at university all the time – academic writing.

If you search for a few hours, finding a job online will most likely prove to be easier than you think.
