Via Garibaldi

EN: Via Garibaldi is street of the historical centre of Genoa, northern Italy, well known for its ancient palaces.

The street dates back to the year 1550. Originally named as Strada Maggiore, then Strada Nuova, only in 1882 its name was dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi.
Since July 2006 Via Garibaldi is inscribed in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as part of the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli and Strade Nuove del Centro Storico of Genoa.

FR: Via Garibaldi est le nom d'une des plus belles rues de Gênes. Autrefois appelée Strada Nuova, cette voie est un exemple exceptionnel d'urbanisme composé d'une douzaine de « palazzi ». Comme la via Balbi, elle fait partie des Strade Nuove qui illustrèrent le « siècle Génois » de 1563 à 1640. En 1882, elle est renommée via Garibaldi en hommage au grand homme politique et patriote italien.

IT: Via Garibaldi, progettata da Bernardino Cantone, è una delle principali strade di Genova e una delle maggiori dell'intero centro storico sotto l'aspetto architettonico per l'impatto magnificente dei suoi palazzi, alcuni dei quali - inclusi negli appositi Rolli - sono dovuti all'estro dell'architetto Galeazzo Alessi.

La strada ha un preciso anno di nascita: il 1550. Originariamente Strada Maggiore, poi Strada Nuova, fino all'Ottocento era con conosciuta con il nome di Via Aurea. Madame de Staël le attribuì un nome ancor più altisonante: quello di Rue de Rois, la Via dei Re.
Nel 1882 venne infine dedicata a Giuseppe Garibaldi.
È completamente in rettilineo, con una leggera pendenza, ed è lunga 250 metri, con una larghezza di 7.5 metri; nacque proprio come strada di rappresentanza.

Dal 13 luglio 2006 è inserita - insieme a tutto il sistema dei Rolli, sviluppato lungo le Strade Nuove di Genova - fra i Patrimoni dell'umanità dell'UNESCO.

Via Garibaldi is one of the streets I passed too many times during my Erasmus in Genova. Not only it has lots of museums, palaces to visit and shops but it also links Via Balbi and Via Bensa to Piazza de Ferrari. 

In Via Garibaldi you can visit 3 big museums: Palazzo Bianco, Palazzo Rosso and Palazzo Doria Tursi. You can visit the 3 of them in the same day and have an advantage price for the ticket. 

However, not only the museums can be visited. As many of the buildings are historical ones, even if nowadays they are private they can still be visited. The best example is the Deutsche Bank branch which can be visited twice a month. 

On the street there are many antique stores and also the Genova Tourims Office. 

Also, from Via Garibaldi you can follow many vicoli into Via Maddalena, another famous street in Genova. 

Most of the times you can hear music from the strolling guitar players which will make your walk more pleasant.
