The park consists of 16 lakes, numerous little waterfalls and beautiful green surroundings. The lakes are situated on different levels and naturally connected to each other. The Plitvice Lakes are also the home of Croatias biggest cascade, called “Veliki Slap”, which you can find on the lowest level of the lake. Not only the lakes are a natural speciality, but also its surrounding is characterised by a huge variety of plant and animal species.
It is a wonderful place to take a hike. Wooden paths were built around and between the lakes, which makes it possible to enjoy the National Park from different point of views. There are various trailsof different distances, so you can choose how long you want your walk around to be.
What impressed me the most was the colour of the lakes. When the sunshine falls into water it shines in bright turquoise, a wonderful colour that you don’t get to see in many places in Europe. Also it is so incredibly clear that you can see the bottom of the lakes most of the time and also sometimes fishes. The lakes look so beautiful, especially on a hot summer day you wish you could just jump in and take a swim. Unfortunately that is forbidden though.
When I visited The Plitvice Lakes a couple of years with my family in summer it was already quite busy but still peaceful enough, but I think the last years the numbers of visitors have increased even more, so you might meet loads of tourists there if you visit in high season.
To enter the park you have to pay a fee between 7€ and 23€, depending on the season. For the hike around the lakes I would at least plan in one entire day, so you can see all part of it and don’t have to rush through.
A special experience are the lakes also in winter. If there is snow, it gives you an incredible view with the clear blue water and the frozen waterfalls surrounded by the snowy scenery.
If in winter or summer, the Plitvice lakes should be on everybody’s list who is visiting the beautiful country of Croatia!
