What is it like to live in Zagreb? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

It is a gorgeous town. Despite being the capital city of Croatia, it is neither too big, nor too small. Besides, it has everything that you need.

What is the student lifestyle like in Zagreb?

You actually have a lot to do. There are always music festivals and food festivals going on in the city centre, lots of interesting museums, places to go like bars, etc. There is also a strong coffee culture in the city. In fact, Croatians drink coffee every day. Besides, drinking beer after work or after lessons is something that usually attracts students to come over here. By the way, Croatians are friendly and warm, so you would feel at home over here.

How much does it cost to live in Zagreb?

It is not an expensive city. To be honest, I would say it is one of the cheapest cities in this part of Europe or Europe as a whole. We do not have euro, as the currency is kuna. You can have a coffee for less than 2 euros and the same goes for the beer, but if you want to have lunch in a restaurant, the meal can cost you around 30-50 kuna, which is around 4-7 euros. Public transport for a student is also around 20 euros per month, which is not expensive either. Besides, going to the cinema or the theatre is even cheaper than in any other city in Europe, which is great.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Zagreb? Is there any advice you can give?

It is not difficult. You can find lots of apartments at a decent price. Here you have the website to search for accommodation in Zagreb.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Croats have one of the best cuisines in the world and we are very proud of it. We have good meat, good fish, lots of traditional dishes: turkey with Mlinci, Štrukle, and Burek, a pie with meat that all Erasmus students love.

What places would you recommend visiting in Zagreb?

  • Musem of broken relationships.
  • Clubs: Hangar, Opera club, Katran.
  • Bars and coffee shops: Corner, Cheese bar, Magnolia slastice (cake, cake, cake! ), 051 (good ice cream), Velvet, Dežman bar.
  • To eat: Good food (burgers, salad), Evergreen sushi (sushi! ), Pizzeria Duksa, Umami (Thai food), Boban, Submarine burger.
  • Viewpoint Zagrebeye.
  • Parks: Zrinjevac, Maksimir park (a must! ), Jarun lake.
  • Upper Town architecture.

Is it good to eat out in Zagreb? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

It is! The offer is great, everyone can find something for themselves.

To eat: Good food (burgers, salad), Evergreen sushi (sushi! ), Pizzeria Duksa, Umami (Thai food), Boban, and Submarine burger.

Is the nightlife good in Zagreb? Where is good to go?

I would not say that the club scene is too good, as there are a lot of places where they play folk music, which I do not fancy. However, some of the good clubs to go are Hangar, Opera club, and Katran.

But there are a lot of good bars to go to, Alcatraz (very cheap drinks, very good music), Time bar (a bit fancy but a good vibe), La Bodega, Bulldog, Corner, and Johann Franck

Be aware that coffee shops open during the day and bars during the night, working till 2 am or longer.
