What is it like to live in Zagreb? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

It is fun, safe, and easy. You will be astonished by the mix of traditional Austro-Hungarian architecture and urban culture that is omnipresent at every corner. The City is vibrant, friendly, and most importantly: safe and well-organized in terms of transport.

What is the student lifestyle like in Zagreb?

The student lifestyle is great. Faculty departments are located all over the city, thus, the whole city of Zagreb can be considered as a student City. It is cheap, compared to other European cities, and offers many events specifically intended for students.

How much does it cost to live in Zagreb?

The costs of living are definitely affordable. Supermarket prices are fairly low compared to other cities, and eating and drinking out is also affordable. Transportation prices are about 10 kn (one way bus or tram ticket) which is less than 1. 5 euro.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Zagreb? Is there any advice you can give?

The best way to find it is via different agencies, or connecting with local people, if possible. The prices depend on the location (the centre is always the most expensive), however, the good thing is that the University is not located in one place, so you can still find accommodation near your faculty and it does not necessarily need to be expensive.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Food is amazing, ranging from local food to urban dishes influenced by other cultures. You should try some of the Balkan dishes, such as cevapi, burek, cvarke, etc. They can all be found in restaurants in the centre, local markets, or best - by becoming friends with Croatian people.

What places would you recommend visiting in Zagreb?

Definitely a sight-seeing tour of the centre, then the lakes and parks of Jarun, Bundek, and Maksimir. There are also fun museums, such as the Museum of Broken Relationships, or the Museum of Illusions, both located in the centre.

Is it good to eat out in Zagreb? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

It is very affordable. There are a couple of good pizza places in the centre, such as Karijola, Zero Zero, or Capuciner (they offer other Foods as well). You can also get affordable sushi in Manzoku, or Evergreen sushi.

Is the nightlife good in Zagreb? Where is good to go?

Nightlife is surprisingly good, considering that Zagreb is a relatively small and calm City. Except local bars that often offer discouts for students, there are clubs you can also go to (Fridays or Saturdays best). Opera club is located right in the centre, near the main square. There is also the club "Klub" that offers alternative music and concerts. Other than that, there is a beautiful, open-space club called Gallery, located by the lake of Jarun, as well as Vintage Industrial Bar that offers great concerts and memorable experiences.

What advice would you give future students heading to Zagreb?

Be open to people and experiences, and you will have a great time. You will soon realize that Croatians are pretty relaxed, ongoing, and willing to help. Also, we speak English pretty well, so don't worry about that. Finally, embrace the culture of drinking coffee in café bars for hours. Yes, it is meaningless and does waste your time, but you will not know the beauty of it until you try.
