Erasmus Experience in Zagreb, Croatia by Zrinka
Why did you choose to go to Zagreb, Croatia?
I wanted to improve my Croatian. I also wanted to experience day-to-day living in a European city.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
5 months. 800 euro per month
What is the student lifestyle like in Zagreb?
For Erasmus students it is not too study intensive, thankfully. Students like to get involved in activities outside the classroom like concerts, outdoor activities, parties and sporting events. Zagreb is famous for its cafe culture so be prepared to spend a good amount of time in cafes with friends talking, people watching and basking in the late afternoon sun.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Zagreb to other students?
Yes definitely! Zagreb is my idea of the ideal location for your Erasmus experience. Such a diverse and exciting little city. So many cool places to check out and explore with friends. Great atmosphere for meeting new people and convenient location for travelling around Europe on your free days. Also prices are relatively low so you can go out most nights without breaking your bank. Public transport system is fantastic.
What is the food like?
I was brought up on Croatian/Balkan cuisine so perhaps I may be a bit bias in saying the food was exceptionally good, however I feel most people would agree with me. You can find many places not far from the centre serving good Croatian home-cooking at very reasonable prices.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Zagreb?
Yes, unfortunately we missed out on living in the student accommodation due to application delays.
How much does it cost to live in Zagreb?
300-400 euro per month roughly depending on how much you pay for accommodation
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
It can be quite difficult at first, but is easy to pick up. Most people speak English anyway. Yes courses are available at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Zagreb from your city?
plane
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Zagreb?
Depends on what's your thing - plenty of night clubs (Hangar, Taboo, Katran, Johan Frank etc) for dancing and bars (Ziraffa,History) for chilling with friends and catching some live music. We would visit Bacchus every Friday night for some quality jazz.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Zagreb?
Zilica and Vilica, Cappuciner, Pizza Zero Zero, Nocturno, Burek
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
plenty of museums and art galleries.
