Erasmus Experience in Zagreb, Croatia by Yéléna

Why did you choose to go to Zagreb, Croatia?

For the weather and the location, both are very attractive.

How long is your stay? How much financial help have you received?

One semester (Feb-Jun/Jul). I've received 200 euros grant.

What do you think of the student atmosphere?

I don't really know about the student atmosphere but the Erasmus atmosphere is just crazy! Every day there's a new party to go to!

Would you recommend the city and the University of Zagreb to other students?

Yes completely, the "Hyper centre" (old town) is marvelous, life is very peaceful (you feel really safe) and you can't beat the prices for a capital city.

What do you think of the country's food?

Very cheap, you can eat and drink for 5 euros and be really full afterwards and it's quite greasy/fatty (especially covered in cheese). Therefore you can't really expect very healthy menus. Nevertheless everything I tasted was good!

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Zagreb?

No.

What's the cost of living in Zagreb?

I have 800 euros a month and it's enough, the only thing that's expensive in Zagreb is the accommodation.

How do you find learning the language? Have you taken language courses organised by the University?

No, I learn as I go, "in the field" some words here and there, every day.

What's the cheapest way to get to Zagreb from your city?

If you book in advance, you can find a flight from Paris for about 100 euros, maybe less.

Which places would you recommend to go partying in Zagreb?

Ziraffa is the cheapest bar in Zagreb and it has a nice atmosphere (beers for 10kn and shots for 8kn).

What about eating in Zagreb, can you tell us your favourite places?

Pan-pek if you aren't that hungry and Nokturno if you are really hungry and it's cheap (huge pizza for 28-32kn).

Do you have any advice to give to future Zagreb students?

Above everything don't get too hassled with it all, living in Croatia, lose yourself in the narrow streets to make the most of it and enjoy! Also make the most of visiting Croatia and the neighbouring countries (I strongly recommend Budapest).

As for the people who come for the 1st semester, it's recommended to come for the 2nd because the weather is just perfect (a whopping 28 degrees on the 3rd of April...).
