Erasmus Experience in Zagreb, Croatia, by Tom
Why did you choose to go to Zagreb, Croatia?
Because I didn't know anything about that country/city. I wanted to discover it, and I heard that it was really nice. And it is.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I received 700 euro from the state to contribute to my Erasmus, and the scholarship I'm doing here from October till February.
What is the student lifestyle like in Zagreb?
We don't have that many classes, and people are all nice to each other when you ask something. We go out several times a week to a cheap pubs, and often we finish the party in a club. Everything is cheap in comparison with Belgium or Western countries, so you can party a lot.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Zagreb to other students?
Yes, definitely!
What is the food like?
Food is not exceptional, but it is not bad. I just don't like the Burek here.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Zagreb?
I had some difficulties in finding one because I started searching late. At the end, I found a good place to stay, but quite expensive in comparison with other Erasmus students I know here. It's much cheaper than in my hometown.
How much does it cost to live in Zagreb?
Depends on your habits/activities. But far less than in Belgium.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Some classes are organized in the semester to learn Croatian, but I didn't take them. It's quite different, so I have some difficulties to get used to it, but most people speak English.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Zagreb from your city?
The easiest is by plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Zagreb?
There are so many places to go out here, and so many organized parties everywhere in Zagreb. I would recommend "Peppermint" for commercial music, and "Sirup" for more techno music.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Zagreb?
There are some good places here to eat. The best pizzeria in Zagreb is really good but I don't remember the name. And on the main square there are some places open very late (one open the whole night! ) with cheap pizza's or burek.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Upper town is really nice in Zagreb, you can see the whole city. Also going to the hills (castle) is very nice. I recommend the coast of Croatia, which is wonderful.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Zagreb in the future?
Don't hesitate, I think it's a very good place to go. It's very secure and trams run the whole night. Besides, people are very open and helpful and it's a perfect city to do an Erasmus.
