Erasmus Experience in Zagreb, Croatia by
Why did you choose to go to Zagreb, Croatia?
It was an area I didn't know much about, it's a new destination for my university and my curiosity brought me here, as well as the Croatian coast.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The grant is for 5 months, regardless of how long you spend there, and I got €350, since I get financial aid from the MECD.
What is the student lifestyle like in Zagreb?
It's very good. Being a country that recently joined the EU, the number of Erasmus students keeps going up and up, especially in Zagreb.
Would you recommend the city and the university of Zagreb to other students?
Yes, I would recommend it. It has a very good atmosphere and it's a city where you'll always have something to do.
What is the food like there?
There's pretty much no local food here, it's all Italian, Turkish and Bosnian food.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Zagreb?
Not at all. It was very easy.
How much does it cost to live in Zagreb?
In a month, living in a flat, you'll spend around €350-450, depending on how much you like to go out and to travel.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the university?
The language is very difficult, and it's pretty much impossible to learn, but almost everyone speaks fluent English there.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Zagreb from your home city?
One of Zagreb's big problems is its airport's connections. If you're looking for cheap tickets, it's much cheaper to fly to Budapest, and taking the bus to Zagreb from there.
Where would you recommend for a night out in Zagreb?
There are a lot of places that have a lot of different styles: History, Pepermint, Opera, Gallery, Mali Medo, Johan Frank, VIP Club, Katrán and many more. You'll never get bored of partying here, that's for sure.
And to eat in Zagreb? What are some of your favourite places to go?
Without a shadow of a doubt, the best place to eat for cheap in Zagreb, that's in the city centre and of a very high quality, is Nokturno. There are also places like Kebab Paradise and Lunch Box for fast food, they're very good.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The cathedral, the San Marcos Square, Jelacic Square, and there are some great places to visit throughout the old town.
Do you have any advice for students coming to Zagreb in the future?
Don't have any doubts about Zagreb, it's a very good option. This has been one of the best years of my life. It's also in a great location to visit other Eastern European countries.
