Erasmus Experience in Zagreb, by Piera

Why did you choose to go to Zagreb, Croatia?

It's mainly because my professor was in touch with one University in Zagreb, plus I wanted to deepen my knowledge of the English language and I knew that Zagreb was a beautiful city and not very expensive.

How does the scholarship work? How much money do you win from that?

Considering an internship you'll get money from 3 to 6 months and it's possible to receive 750 euros per month.

How is the Campus vibe in Zagreb?

Croatians at first are suspicious but after a little warm-up they get very welcoming and kind.

There are also many Erasmus exchange students, and the ESN Zagreb association is always active because of various events.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Zagreb to other students?

Definitely, the city is very beautiful, peaceful (even being a Capital town), and there are many clubs where to have fun at night.

How is the national food?

The food is tasty enough and not even that expensive.

There are many different restaurants, not only places where you can get croatian food but there are even italian restaurants, chinese restaurants, vegan ones and so on.

Was it difficult to find an accomodation in Zagreb?

No it wasn't, luckily I had the contact of a croatian guy who did an internship in Italy and he did help me a lot in finding an accomodation.

How much does life cost in Zagreb?

More or less 500 euros per month, even less.

The croatian currency (Kuna) is worth less than the Euro so with a good scholarship you can easily afford life here.

How do you feel speaking croatian? Did you attend some lessons at the University?

I didn't attend any lesson but during my period here I have deepened my knowledge of the English language speaking with croatian and international guys.

Which is the cheapest way to get to Zagreb from your town?

The cheapest way is to fly from Alghero to Trieste and then boarding a bus from Trieste to Zagreb.

Where do you recommend to go partying in Zagreb?

The city centre is just packed with clubs, pubs and bars where you can have a good time.

And what about going out for a meal in Zagreb? Do you have any favourite place?

Again I recommend to go to the city centre, from the Main Square you can get to the main street which is packed with ristopubs where you can eat good and also drink good.

And what do you suggest to visit in town?

The cathedral, you can find it in the city centre and it's quite beautiful, but even the old town is worth to see.

Plus, in Zagreb there are many museums that one can visit and also parks and lakes where to enjoy a tranquil walk, such as Lake Karun and Park Maksimir.

Do you have any recommendation for new exchange students that will study in Zagreb?

In my opinion Zagreb is a beautiful city, filled with very nice people who can help you out and give you suggestions, here you'll have a good time for sure.

My advice is to enjoy yourselves as much as possible!
