A homey atmosphere pub

Published by flag-hr Valentina Bregovac — 6 years ago

Kult was my favorite pub (if you can call it like that) from the first day I stepped foot in it. It gives a perfect homey atmosphere, although I still don't know anybody there. I don't go there so often, mostly because my friends change coffee bars every time we go for coffee, but I haven't found another bar in Zadar that would feel so comfortable.

The first thing that caught my attention was the name of the pub: Kult. When you enter inside, everything screams this name, although I'm not really sure what I wanna say by that. I guess you have to get there to feel it. Inside, the place is quite small, just a couple of tall tables with chairs and a bar, a little elevated part that on Thursday nights serves as a stage, and big mirrors on the side walls.

Everything is wooden, the chairs, the tables, the bar - that's why I called it a pub. Above the entrance door hangs a wooden sign and in it carved the name KULT. Here and there on the walls are similar wooden signs, four of them, on each a letter carved in glagolitic (the first Croatian writing), spelling K U L T.

When you pass the right part of the bar, there is a small, one of the smallest toilets I've ever been in; two girls can't pass each other when waiting for the toilet. But their toilet is always clean and has plenty of paper towels.

Outside, right beneath the windows, there are little wooden benches and little tables, so people can sit there as well. The cool thing is that these tables are like in the passage, in the alley that passes there, so if you stretch your legs too much, some passerby might trip over them and fall.

Across the bar is the terrace that they are sharing with another bar. You can see where is the line between the two terraces because they have slightly different chairs. If you're short sighted like me and don't like to wear glasses in public very much, you can easily confuse them and end up in the other bar (name is Dišpet). The terrace is closed in winter because, obviously, it's too cold to sit outside. However, maybe two weeks ago it was semi-opened; it was quite warm for this time of the year and people were sitting outside. The terrace is huge and the floor is wooden, chairs are wicker and everything is in this brown-black-grey tones, but it doesn't look cold at all. This terrace is always full in the summertime, since it is partly topped, and partly under the big trees, thus the shade is provided.

At the beginning of the terrace, on the right side (looking from when you get out of the door of the pub) there is a pult with the DJ. Now, since this pub is in the center of the old town, the music can't be too loud and you can't make those crazy summer DJ parties, but still it looks cool and the music played there is great. Mostly foreign music, but not always the commercial one that you hear in every bar.

They play different genres, depends on the mood of the DJ, I would say. In the summer, they often have live music, like klapas (vocal groups - it's a thing in Dalmatia, everybody loves them) for example. In the night, this place is crowded and if you don't come early, you probably won't have a place to sit. People don't care much, they order drinks and stand around.

On Thursdays, there is Karaoke night in Kult. I'm not sure but I think it's the only pub where you can sing karaoke in Zadar. Their karaoke are quite cool, the music is ok, the lyrics actually work, microphones are great. Like I mentioned above, the little elevated part in the pub inside serves as a stage. The music they have on the karaoke list is diverse, there are foreign and Croatian songs. Now they've updated the list so they really have many songs to choose from. And don't think that this karaoke is just for the sake of karaoke; the best singers get prizes, such as sunglasses, headphones, t-shirts etc., while the song that wins in the finale gets a bottle of Jameson. Not bad, ha?

And the last but definitely important, the service is great, the waiters are nice, fast, sometimes they get a little crazy (in a good way, though), and the coffee is absolutely great!
