Experience in Wageningen University, Netherlands by Charlotte
Generally, what is Wageningen University like?
The courses and learning opportunities are amazing! It is possible to find very diverse (yet super advanced when you know what topics you're interested in) courses. The city of Wageningen is really cosy and the student-ambiance is great!
What are the facilities like?
Modern, clean. There are always computers available, and the common places are very cosy for a chat or coffee. It is very much linked to nature as well: outside, there are places to sit and enjoy the sun, and inside, you can always find a spot with a nice view.
What are the tutors like?
The tutors are very qualified, but still approachable. There is not a huge gap between students and tutors: they just want to teach us, and that is really enjoyable. They can always speak English.
Are the lessons easy in Wageningen University?
As a master student who chose her courses very specifically in accordance to what I'm interested in, the courses were fairly easy to pass. But in themselves, the courses are pretty advanced and "difficult" (you learn a lot in a short period). The thing is: there are so many choices in courses that if you choose the courses you're interested in, working for the course doesn't feel as much like work. Also, if you're organized and work well during office hours, working during weekends or in the evenings is not necessary (and not expected!) (maybe except for exam weeks).
Does the University organise activities? If so, what are they like?
There are some activities organized by the University (colloquia, concerts) but mostly of academic nature. However, the various student associations organize activities very often (food, parties, discussions, etc.).
Do you think there is a good quality of teaching?
Yes, very much! The teachers take their job seriously (I feel like it's not *just* a thing they have to do next to their research), and are passionate about the topics. I love that there are usually many guest lecturers during courses: this way, we always learn from experts.
