What is it like to live in Wolverhampton? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Wolverhampton is a small city on the edge of the West Midlands Conurbation. With high unemployment the consequence is that accommodation and living costs generally are lower than those in its more prosperous neighbour Birmingham. Travel to Birmingham is reasonably cheap and frequent. Take advantage of centro travel cards for buses, trains and metro to make the most of the area.

What is the student lifestyle like in Wolverhampton?

The 5th biggest uni generates its own social life. It is known that the students party well and join in as many activities as possible. Recommended is a visit to the Combermere Arms which is on Chapel Ash - a unique experience. Use the West Park for space and just relaxing in - it's a super park. The Thai Restaurant on Darlington St is good value particularly at lunchtime.

Shopping within Wolverhampton can be cheaper than other UK cities.

How much does it cost to live in Wolverhampton?

Look around. Many student share houses but beware of hidden deposit and key costs, Very few English students use the uni accommodation because there are hidden fines and costs there as well. Try to get accommodation alongside English speaking people to improve your English rapidly. The local dialect is known as "Yam Yam" and unique to this area. Good luck with it!

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Wolverhampton? Is there any advice you can give?

It is not difficult to find accommodation at all. Don't just sign the whole year uni accommodation contract. Getting out of it can be difficult. Victoria Halls and all the rest are nice but at the higher end of the market in price.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

There are loads of take away food shops covering every type of food. The main take away food area is on Chapel Ash.

Restaurants are not so frequent, There are three good Italian restaurants on School Street. One reasonable Greek restaurant on Stafford Street

Most pubs do value meals throughout the day and the suburbs have various ethnic restaurants. Birmingham City Centreis only 15 minutes by train and loaded with eating places

What places would you recommend visiting in Wolverhampton?

Go to the "Combermere Arms" on Chapel Ash for the authentic old English pub experience.

Visit the "Trumpet" in Bilston (get there by Metro) for free jazz. The Civic has loads of pop groups and entertainment preforming live. The "Grand Theatre" has a wide variety of entertainment. Cinema complex is at Bentley Bridge.

Leisure pools and sports facilities at Central Baths (West Park) Bentley Bridge and Bilston. Go to the Black Country Museum at Dudley for a 19th century view of life in this area.

Is it good to eat out in Wolverhampton? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Italian food is the best at Bellas on Chapel Ash and Catallanies in School Street

Loads of good Indian Restaurants in the city

Thai Restaurant on Darlington Street is fully recommended and well used by Thai's fromBirmingham as well.

And of course English Fish and Chips all over the place

Is the nightlife good in Wolverhampton? Where is good to go?

It has some good points and the city centre has night life starting from 22.00 hrs. although all the student venues are close together there. Many head for Birmingham. Live cheap in Wolverhampton and partying in Birmingham

What advice would you give future students heading to Wolverhampton?

Make the best of it and enjoy. The Quakers (Society of Friends) at 8b Summerfield Road WV1 4PR will always give you advice and a cup of coffee.
