Winnipeg at 700, 000 is less a city, more a large small-town. However, due to its isolation is has a far greater arts, music, theatre, culinary and cultural scenes in general than most cities its size. People are very helpful and it is one of the most diverse cities in Canada.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Winnipeg has a great culinary community - particularly in terms of restaurants reflecting the city's diversity; there are many great ethiopian, vietnamese, indian, latin american, caribbean, mediterranean, eastern european, chinese restaurants. Also many great restaurants serving local cuisines.

What places would you recommend visiting in Winnipeg?

Wolsely is the best neighbourhood to live in either for students or families; very communal with great local coffee shops, restaurants and shops. West Broadway has many of the same amenities. Otherwise the Exchange district has great restaurants and bars along with architecture. St. Boniface, the french area is great as well especially during Festival du Voyageur in February. Osborne and South Osborne both are great areas with very different vibes; the former is home to many bars, restaurants and shops while the latter is more family oriented with book stores, coffee shops, green space and great restaurants.

Is it good to eat out in Winnipeg? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

One of my favourite restaurants is Famena's (located on garry just south of Portage) - it is a Guyanese restaurant operated by the most wonderful couple; both are very kind with a sense of humour, the food is delicious, the price is very affordable, the portions are large and there are often interesting people to meet there. I also like BMC Market on South Osborne - for $5 one can have a full meal of authentic mexican tacos - also operated by a very friendly family.

Is the nightlife good in Winnipeg? Where is good to go?

Nightlife is good, you can find whatever you are looking for. For live music the handsome daughter, the goodwill, the Windsor and the Pyramid are usually the best places to go. For dance clubs the exchange and osborne village is popular. Lounges and patios (in the summer) are also very popular on Corydon Avenue.

What advice would you give future students heading to Winnipeg?

Dress very warmly in the winter (the cold is colder than you can imagine), bring an open mind and enjoy!
