What is it like to live in Winnipeg? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I've lived in Winnipeg pretty much all my life. It's a great city, with a lot to do and so many great places to eat. I would recommend it wholeheartedly.

What is the student lifestyle like in Winnipeg?

The student lifestyle in Winnipeg really depends on the school and the program you're studying. If you're at a school downtown you're close to lots of great restaurants and pubs, good night life, and there's almost always live music somewhere.

How much does it cost to live in Winnipeg?

Winnipeg is very affordable, groceries aren't too expensive, transit is $2. 60 (per ride) or just under $70/month for a student discount. I lived at home, but friends found decent apartments for as little as $650/month.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Winnipeg? Is there any advice you can give?

I can't really give advice on that. Kijiji is a good source to buy/sell/rent anything in Winnipeg.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is amazing! So much variety! If you want good Indian food, try anywhere on Ellice Avenue. The Exchange District and Osborne Village are also loaded with great places to eat. If you're here in the summer (early August), be sure to check on Folklorama: it's a two-week multicultural festival across the city with food and entertainment from all over the globe! So good!

What places would you recommend visiting in Winnipeg?

The Forks - where the two big rivers meet (skating in the winter, cool market shops all year long)

Osborne Village - trendy area, good for shopping, eating out, seeing shows

Exchange District - cool buildings, new restaurants, awesome little shops

Assiniboine Park/Zoo - beautiful park, good for walking, biking, hanging out (must try Sargent Sundae for ice cream across the street)

Is it good to eat out in Winnipeg? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Excellent for eating out!

  • Nu Burger (Osborne Village) - great burgers, awesome vegetarian options
  • The Grove - the pizza, so good!
  • Luxalune (Osborne Village) - amazing poutine, great beer
  • Olympia Diner (St. James) - best Greek food in the city

Is the nightlife good in Winnipeg? Where is good to go?

  • King's Head Pub - always live music, pub atmosphere, big but cosy and always busy
  • The Good Will - relatively new, but great for new local talent/themed-events
  • Handsome Daughter - great for live music, indie artists

There's clubs, but I haven't been in years and they're probably all different names now, ha.

What advice would you give future students heading to Winnipeg?

Bond with your classmates, force each other to go out and have fun — even when it's freezing.
