The worst hamburger and American buffet ever
The American restaurant, Yours Sports Bar, is located in the heart of Wiesbaden city centre in Schlossplatz, behind the red church (Marktkirche, or Market Church, as it's known as in English).
From the outside, it looks like a small place, but once you have climbed upstairs, you will find yourself met with the surprise of the day.
It is a restaurant with just one floor, but it is actually located on the second floor of a building. Once you have arrived upstairs, you have to wait until a waiter or waitress comes to attend to you.
The place itself is huge and its decoration and atmosphere is 100% American through and through.
There are lots of tables for you to sit at, although there are some that are "reserved" for couples and other for groups either small or large. On all of the walls in the bar, lots of photos of sporting stars are hung up, as well as several television screens showing different sports channels, on which you can watch basketball, American football, football, golf, and tennis, to name but a few.
The first time that I went to Yours, it was with some colleagues from work.
Given that the entire team was free that day, the French team decided to go out after work (this is the team that I work in).
We chose to go to Yours because one of the girls had already been before and she had told us that it was quite good.
After sitting down in quite a comfortable spot, we began to read the menu. On that particular day, there was an offer where they would give you a drink of your choice for free upon ordering a burger for 8€ I think it was.
It took us a bit of time to decide what we were going to eat because there was quite a variety of burgers on offer, but, finally, almost everyone ended up ordering the same thing except me, as I chose a turkey burger instead.
In general, I hate burgers because I don't really trust minced meat that much in terms of knowing what they could have mixed it with. But, at that moment in time, a burger was one of the very few options to choose from, or perhaps the only option... The rest of the items on the menu were somewhat more expensive and seemed more like something that you would order in a real restaurant (one that uses knives and forks and takes more than twenty minutes for your food to be served) than in a sports bar.
The majority of the burgers were made of beef, then there were two chicken ones and just one turkey burger. I had never tried a turkey meat burger before, and given that I normally like turkey, I decided to take a risk and try something new. Big mistake.
They started to bring our drinks over to us. Almost all of us had gone for a beer apart from one person, who had ordered a cocktail and a soft drink.
Soon after, they proceeded to serve us our burgers.
Her question seemed really quite unprofessional in my eyes and it offended me a bit if I'm honest. However, I tried to maintain composure and I told her "no" in the politest way possible; I had ordered a turkey burger, and if there wasn't one available, I didn't want anything at all.
The waitress wasn't offended, thank God, and she headed off in the direction of the kitchen to change the order.
I told my colleagues to start eating so that their food wouldn't go cold, but, even still, they insisted on waiting for my meal to arrive.
After waiting for almost fifteen minutes, they finally brought me my food, and, as I said earlier, it was a huge mistake ordering this turkey burger.
Looking at the food from a distance, it looked quite good, but after taking off the bun off the top of the burger and seeing the meat, I was taken by surprise.
I was expecting that it would be like a typical burger that comes in a standard burger shape (what a great explanation, I know). But no, the burger that they served me literally contained grated meat between the bun.
Yes, you have read that correctly. It seemed as if they had grated the meat with a cheese grater before boiling it in water, putting it in a bowl of melted butter (to keep it in its compact shape), and then put it between the bun.
After inspecting the burger that they had served me for a good while and thinking "what kind of rubbish is that?! ", I decided that the time had come to give it a try.
I honestly couldn't believe it... what kind of burger was this exactly? It was a monstrosity. It had completely spoilt my appetite.
To put it bluntly: disgusting.
It was tasteless and the texture was like gelatin. It had to be the worst burger that I have ever tried in my whole life.
And, this wasn't the only thing that was wrong with it. This burger didn't even contain lettuce or tomato, just ketchup and cheese. The unwritten rule of burgers is that they contain the meat patty, lettuce and tomato as standard, and then, if you want, you can add cheese, ketchup, mustard and/or mayonnaise to it, isn't it not? Or is it just me that's weird and being too fussy?
I don't know... but let's just say that it disappointed me greatly. Even still, I ended up eating it because, if I didn't, they would just end up throwing it away and that is a sin in my eyes; you do not throw away food unnecessarily.
At least the burger was served with a generous helping of French fries, which were actually quite good, with a couple of sauces on the side.
But, in short, I absolutely do not recommend trying the turkey burger at Yours Sports Bar.
However, my colleagues told me that their burgers were actually quite good - juicy, tasty and cooked to perfection. So, if you do decide to go to this restaurant, maybe it would be better to order a beef or chicken burger instead.
On that same day, while we were waiting for our food, there were some leaflets advertising the sports bar on top of the table.
At weekends, they were putting on a typical American brunch buffet in the mornings, from 11am to 1pm.
As I explained to you all in another one of my posts, brunch is where you combine breakfast and lunch into one meal because you have woken up too late and you cannot decide if you are too late for breakfast or too early for lunch.
When I saw the leaflet, I put it in my bag and decided that I would come back with my American friend when she came to visit the following week.
The price was actually quite good - if I remember correctly, it was less than 10€ per person - so I had thought about inviting her to dine there with me and that would save me from having to cook on Saturday morning.
Anyway, to finish off the story about my first visit to Yours, I will just say that I was disappointed, but I thought about go back again just to try this American brunch buffet.
After eating, we paid the bill, which you can (fortunately) pay for with a credit card (I've found that some places only let you pay with cash or with a Maestro card), and then we all headed off in the direction of our respective homes.
With regards to the next time that I visited Yours, it was also a huge disappointment.
The day started off quite well. We woke up feeling excited to go to the buffet, so it wasn't at all difficult for us to get ourselves up and dressed. We decided to go just before 11am so that we could take full advantage of eating as much as we could before they closed at 1pm.
This is what we usually do because, if you are going to go to a buffet, it's better to arrive when they open and stay there until closing time, so that you can fill yourself up properly. It's not like you eat at a buffet every single day now, is it?
After arriving at Yours and sitting down close to the table where the plates were kept, we proceeded to leave our belongings on the chairs and we went to have a look at what was on offer.
There was a wide variety of food on offer. I think I remember there being practically everything there that a typical American would usually eat for breakfast:
- Pancakes with a pot of maple syrup to one side, chunks of butter, and blueberry sauce
- Fried bacon
- French toast (I will show you how to make this in another post)
- Slices of tomato with mozzarella cheese
- Sausages
- Scrambled eggs with butter
- Slices of turkey and smoked ham
- Toast
- Cheesecake
- Pieces of fruit (like orange, banana, watermelon, grapes, etc. ), i. e. a fruit salad
There were a couple of other things that I cannot remember for the life of me, but, let's be serious, it was all just pure cholesterol designed to clog up your arteries.
From a distance, it all looked really food, but once you started eating it, it didn't have that same appeal.
When I went to fill my plate, I put a little bit of everything on it so that I couldn't say that I hadn't not tried anything before I was too full to eat anything else, and then I sat down to eat.
The pancakes seemed a little bit dry and tasteless to me, but after adding the maple syrup and blueberry sauce, the taste improved significantly.
There was nothing particularly special about the scrambled eggs, they were just bog-standard scrambled eggs like their name indicates.
I didn't at all like the French toast - it was very, very dry and they had sprinkled icing sugar on top of it.
Let's put it this way, it is a plus to have this icing sugar available if people feel like adding it to their French toast, but they should not have sprinkled it onto literally every single piece. The logical thing would have been to put the sugar in a separate bowl that people could use to sprinkle on to their liking, but not to force people to eat it a certain way.
And, well there's nothing to say about the meat on offer. It was all too fried and very greasy; with every bite I took, I could feel my arteries slowly clogging up with cholesterol.
But anyway, I turned a bit of a blind eye towards my health on that particular day and I ate absolutely everything, which, in the end, was a bad decision.
After having filled myself with food to the point where I could burst, I began to feel a little bit nauseous. At first, I think that it was because I had just eaten too much, but then, less than ten minutes later, I had come down with a fever and my head started to hurt.
My friend and I ran home, or at least we tried to, as I had to stop after a couple of steps to get my breath back because it was really difficult for me to walk and my head was spinning, never mind that my stomach hurt me a lot.
When we finally arrived home, almost half an hour after having left the restaurant (it normally takes me just 15 minutes to get from my house to the red church), I rushed to grab some tablets and I took a few to at least try and lessen my fever.
Anyway, after that eventful day, I was on sick leave for 10 days while I took corticosteroids and antibiotics for an infection.
Moral of the story: if you don't like something that you are eating, don't eat it, no matter how good it looks.
But, seriously speaking, I was really unwell and I had to go to the doctor on three separate occasions because the medication I was taking wasn't working and there was no other way to bring my fever down.
I had a fever of almost 40ºC for the first three days, and, for the rest of them, it didn't drop lower than 38ºC.
Since then, I decided to never ever go back to Yours Sports Bar.
Honestly, I think it's a shame because Yours has quite a good reputation in the city, both in Wiesbaden as well as Frankfurt, and the people that I normally go out with usually go there. However, after the really bad experience that I had eating there, I would never want to risk it happening to me again.
