My Experience in Viña Del Mar, Chile by Javier
What did you think of living in Viña Del Mar? Would you recommend it? How was it?
It is a tourist city and compared to Valparaíso which is located basically next to it, it is extremely expensive. It is a safe place for the citizens. It's very quiet and has little to see in the city itself, but has many things to discover near the city.
How is the student environment in Viña Del Mar?
Very good, it is an excellent city for students, along with Santiago obviously, but the coast makes it have a special charm. Very good atmosphere and there's parties practically everyday.
How much does it cost to live in Viña Del Mar?
500€-600€ approximately.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in Viña Del Mar? Can you give some advice?
Once you're in the city, it is not very complicated, but it's not the easiest thing to do either. The only advice I can give is to move around the city and look for apartments for lease or try to contact real estate agencies.
How is the food in the country? Which were your favorite dishes?
The food, even though being close to the Pacific, disappointed me and is not even comparable to the food in Spain. There was a lot of junk food (hot dogs with lots of mayo, avocado... ). Obviously, there were a lot of good places, but the price quality is a lot higher. The empanadas are a staple in South America and in Chile. The empanadas are what I liked the most compared to other typical foods of the county, and they are the best empanadas I've had in this lifetime.
What places do you recommend to visit in Viña Del Mar?
In Viña Del Mar there is a casino and a bit more, but it is worth seeing the dunes of Concón to watch the sunset, as well as Valparaíso, which is the neighboring city of Viña Del Mar, which is a city with a ton of culture. And that's about everything.
What about places to eat in Viña Del Mar? Can you talk about your favorite sites?
There are many places and variety, I would opt for any place that has sushi because it's a lot cheaper than places in Spain.
What places would you recommend to party in Viña Del Mar?
OVO nightclub (which is in the Casino de Viña del Mar), Me robó el Corazón, and Stringrey.
Any advice you want to give to future students in Viña Del Mar?
Live in Viña and party in Valparaíso. Valparaiso is much cheaper and a better environment. Viña Del Mar is touristy and expensive, while Valparaiso is bohemian and cheaper.
