Christmas in Vilanova i la Geltrù

It is always a pleasant experience to go around in Christmas time, even more if you are seeing for the first time a town in its special Christmas dress. That is why, despite the typical frenzy and lack of time which usually characterise our life in these days, I took pleasure in having a stroll in the centre, finding out several interesting things.

It may seem strange to find an ice skating rink less than one kilometre far from the sea. And yet, that is exactly what you can see in the middle of Plaza de la Vila, right in front of the town hall. Undoubtedly, an original possibility for entertainment for the Vilanovins, who appear to take advantage of it, judging from the good number of kids having fun on the rink.

Just next to the skating rink is placed, protected by a special case and watched by video-cameras, a local version of the crib. The setting for the Nativity Scene, indeed, is inspired to the surroundings of Vilanova back to the 19th century. Some of the most characteristic buildings of the town are easily recognisable: the hermit of San Cristobal, the lighthouse, a typical masia (farmhouse). Though unusual, this maritime scenery arouses the curiosity of many passers-by.

Leaving the square and walking up the Rambla Principal, obviously cheered up by Christmas lights and animated by a swarm of people searching for gifts, I reached the Church of Sant Antoni Abat, in front of which is placed a Christmas tree which enlivens the atmosphere of the place.

Making my way on the left of the church, I turned into Carrer de Cabanyes, where a wonderful collection of small cribs is housed as a permanent exposition. Once again, it is the combination of the local and folkloric element with the tradition of the Nativity Scene which makes the exhibition worth seeing. In the picture above, for instance, you can see the Evangelical scene of the Annunciation set in front of the oldest church in the town, Santa Maria de la Geltrù. At any rate, it is also possible to admire more traditional representations, along with other fine sceneries from different parts of Catalonia. The exposition is open every day from 19 to 20. 30, but for more information check their website.
