Experience in Veszprém, Hungary, by Gonca
What is it like to live in Veszprém? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I like living here because Veszprém is very small, and it is easier to commute and to get to know the city and all the necessary places. I would recommend Veszprém to other volunteers since the locals are really open to foreigners and eager to share and introduce their culture, food etc. Moreover, it is just 20 min by bus from Balaton lake which is awesome in the summer time and also very romantic in winter. Veszprém is a small but functional city. There is a migration office that provides information about visa or other burocratic problems one might have.
What is the student lifestyle like in Veszprém?
I was mostly surrounded by high-school students. They act really older and party a lot. Other than that, I met some university students in the library. Since I am looking for a Master's degree scholarship and I am also sending lots of applications after work, most of the time I was too tired to go out. During the weekends, I frequently went to Budapest or to other countries, while on other weekends I needed to stay at home and save money in order to travel again. That is why I can't give a true definition of lifestyle experience here.
How much does it cost to live in Veszprém?
We are given 210 Euros and I pay at least 170 Euros and this includes my travels once every two months to other cities/countries.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Veszprém? Is there any advice you can give?
We did not need to find one since it is our organization that provides us with accomodation, so that is why I don't have any idea.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is sometimes different than what I am used to. For instance, pasta with sugar, fruit soup (sweet) etc. However I like eating it as it is free from kindergarten.
What places would you recommend visiting in Veszprém?
The Castle, on the Castle Hill, the Betekints Hotel area (a green area with a little pond), the Balaton lake.
Is it good to eat out in Veszprém? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
I always eat at the kindergarten and bring the extra food home for dinner. I can recommend Johnny's Bistro, Daiquiri Café, Sandwich and the Café in Balatonplaza for desserts.
Is the nightlife good in Veszprém? Where is good to go?
There are several cheap student bars like Skorpio, Fészek and Grund, and also a club called Expresso and Dc. I really like the Expresso they make when there is an event.
What advice would you give future students heading to Veszprém?
I would recommend them to lower their expectations if they are coming from a big city. I have never lived in such a small place before, but since I didn't have high hopes, I didn't have any disappointments. People here are really nice and helpful and they are so eager to get to know foreign people who are interested in their culture and language. However, my only dissappointment was not being able to find any friends in my age (24), as most of the volunteers I encountered are around 19 and it was hard to integrate in university students' groups.
